The Chinese Woman...

Did the Chinese woman-- who seemed to work at the bank with Lee Remick's character-- really believe that Ross Martin's character had all this money to give her ill son? Or was she part of an evil plot with Ross? She certainly was expecting "an ill wind," even having a lawyer handy when the detectives came to visit her... Plus she had a very nasty, nasty attitude. Why was there no explanation for her actions and attitudes?

I am thinking that maybe Ross was supposed to be the father of her son from a relationship some years before but that explanation was later cut from the movie perhaps because it was thought to be too risque for 1962.

It's left somewhat ambiguous, huh? It's possible that she loved the guy and didn't want to accept that he was a murderer, or there was really something else going on. I'll probably go with the latter myself.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

It was not the same Asian woman who was working at the bank.

As far as her motivations go, it's open to conjecture. I figured she was in on some prior criminal dealings with Lynch, apparently willingly.

That would explain her attitude toward him, but if that was true, I wish it had been revealed to the audience so we wouldn't be confused about it.

I don't believe that she was part of any plot. It is explained that Red sometimes "took up" with women of Asian descent. I think Red was attracted to her and paid her son's medical bills (probably with stolen money).
