Lesson in alcoholism
If you had to show a film to youngsters to put them off boozing would you choose this or The Lost weekend. Both very powerful films but approach the subject differently.

I had some problems with alcohol in my youth, since I have watched a lot of movies with drunkers.
Jack lemmon is superb in this movie, he really shows the inner of his character, I was deeply touched!!!
I rank Ray milland's performance in The lost weekend among the best I have ever seen!!!!!
Finney in Under the volcano is another top notch performance, totally believeable!!!!!
Richard Grant in Withnail & I is great too
I hate Nicholas cage but he is brillant in Leaving las vegas
Mickey rourke in Barfly
I think I would choose DOWAR. I find it less "stagey" than TLW. Don is a full-
blown alcoholic at the beginning. DOWAR gives a better sense of the progression of the disease.
"Joey, have you ever been in a Turkish prison?"
I personally (i.e. I am talking about me) found the pitying looks of the men in the Houston scene to be very effective anti-drinking technique. So many kids are worried about how their hair looks or whether they have a pimple on their face, etc. I heard a piece on NPR about a more effective anti-smoking campaign that focused NOT on the bad health effects or cost, but instead stressed the contempt, scorn, disgust felt towards the smoker.
