Billy Budd on DVD

Does anyone know if a DVD release of Billy Budd (1962, directed by Ustinov) is planned in the near future. A superb film that garnered very favourable critical recognition in the 1960s and one that I have very positive memory of.

No I don't, but sounds like a good idea!

reply

If not on DVD is it on VHS?

reply

I have seen used VHS copies on ebay, but they are pretty pricey.

This certainly should be on DVD. It's one of my greatest of all time movie experiences. Who decides what goes on DVD?

I would have thought that this would a good title for Criterion to issue since no one else has, but copyright ownership may be an impediment. Perhaps we could all drop them a note with our suggestion anyway. Criterion's website states that title suggestions should be directed to: [email protected] .

I just got it from eBay, and have made a copy. Give me a mailing address and I will mail it to you. (You may have to watch it on a computer, as it was recorded in the USA.)

Mickey!

You should know better than to post your email address on the internet. The crawlers will scarf it up and send you more Nigerian scams. But perhaps that's what you want. ;)

There's no need to post your address on IMDb. They forward mail to you. Just say, "PM me" and the site forwards to you without you having to reveal your address to the world at large. If you really want to write your address, at least write it "michael_chaplan(at mark)ringo.net". This foils the crawler and literate people will know to substitute the @.

Hi Guys,

Good news! Moviesunlimited.com has Billy Budd coming out on DVD on 8/1/06. This is a great movie & is long overdue on DVD.

Are you serious? How can I order it? Thanks for your information. [email protected]

reply

I have it on DVD, the sound quality seems low to me, which is disappointing.

reply

I got it and it's a panned and scanned version and pretty poor quality ... looks like a well worn TV print.
We still watched it and I was just as moved as the first time.

reply

Would like to buy this but not at the current price. Cheapest I could find was £17. A bit OTT.

Just got DVD from Amazon.

Great movie - crap video quality wih not one extra - no menu, trailer, subtitles, etc.

reply

DO NOT BUY THE DVD LISTED ON AMAZON.COM - IT HAS A HORRENDOUS 1.33:1 PAN AND SCAN TRANSFER. The true ratio is 2.35:1 Panavision. Avoid this DVD at all costs - and great cost it is, too. Maddening.

The DVD Journal 11/21/06

"We don't have any official press yet from Warner Home Video, but retailers have been promised a "Literary Classics Collection" next year, which will include a double-feature release of both 1937 and 1952 renditions of The Prisoner of Zenda, as well as Raoul Walsh's 1951 Captain Horatio Hornblower starring Gregory Peck, Peter Ustinov's 1962 Billy Budd, Vincente Minnelli's 1949 Madame Bovary with Jennifer Jones and James Mason, and 1948's The Three Musketeers with Lana Turner, Gene Kelly, and June Allyson. Look for the set to arrive on March 6."
