"You've Forced Me to Offend You"
The vast majority of the powerful US Senators in Advise and Consent are (amusingly given today's politics), pretty decent and honorable types.
But there is one villain in the piece -- George Grizzard's ambitious, arrogant, in-love-with-himself rotter of a Senator. And he has no sense of humor. And everybody on the other side is the enemy. He's the kind of guy when he comes into a room, you excuse yourself to get away from him.
The much more measured, stately and patrician Walter Pidgeon(as the Senate Majority Leader) is a much better brand of politican, circa 1962.
And after bunch of scenes where Senator Pidgeon tries to duck Senator Grizzard's demands -- like to be put on a key investigative committee -- Pidgen can't lie or fake it anymore. He tells Grizzard: "NO." And then he has a great line, I wish I could use it more often:
"I'm sorry. You've forced me to offend you."
He damn well sure did, and Pidgeon had enough.
A great little line in a pretty great old time 60's movie.
