Great Laughton from Yorkshire to S.Carolina???

Hi everybody, just seen this old movie on the TV .
Very nice movie for me, but quite an anti-commercial matter for the (poor) actual Hollywood standards.
Anyway, here is my doubt: I saw the movie with the Italian voice always coupled to Mr Laughtn in each of his movies, a fierce and let's say important voice; but how could his english pronunciation be hidden under a S.C. character?
I don't think he could be dubbed, not Charles Laughton...

I did perfectly understand what you meant, forzaparis.

Let me tell you that Laughton's pronunciation was perfectly convincing. But I'm French, and maybe not the best umpire for these matters.

I'm watching it right now and right in the middle of Laughton's first speech before the Senate, his accent goes from Foghorn Leghorn to Shakespearean English in about 2 seconds ... only to go right back into a southern drawl! It's a hoot! I really can't believe that a great director like Preminger wouldn't yell "Cut!" and make him to do it again. Maybe Laughton was in poor health during the filming of this picture and that was the best take they could get. Or maybe the great senator grew up in the Southern part of CAMBRIDGE!

Yes, I heard that switch too. That's when I realized it was Laughton (sorry, I'm not so familiar with who's who in movies from 50 years ago).

I asked the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.
