It looks highly unlikely that The Virginian will EVER be released or shown again in my country. I have to admit I'm tempted by the "dubious" complete series sets.
I realise they will be off-air broadcasts, but that doesn't necessarily mean all that bad quality, so has anyone bought it? Are the episodes at least watchable?
You know, I've wondered that too. I'm hoping that Timeless Media will release at least the rest of the seasons with Judge Garth.
Have you tried to get the DVD that *has* been released(remastered)? I know several people in Australia and the UK who've ordered it and have been able to view it on their DVD players. Just a thought.

No, I haven't. I do sometimes import US DVDs without problems, but the cost of that set, plus international postage, plus import duty, would make it considerably more expensive than buying the whole 9 Season "complete" set. That's my dilemma. Of course I'd rather have the official set, both on principle and in quality terms, but I hate getting into a show only to find out that I'll never see the rest. Under about $25, importing isn't too expensive. It used to be under about $35 was OK, but with the weaker pound and our import duty limit, anything over $25 or so incurs almost another 50% tax bill on top of the added price, so it suddenly becomes unrealistic. And I do like having a mountain of episodes to watch, otherwise I find myself unreasonably rationing myself.
If the Complete sets were first generation VHS rips at least, I think I could happily live with that; I only ever saw the late episodes of The Virginian and that was on about an 18 inch black and white TV! Some of these type of sets can be really quite good; others are painful to try to watch. I've only ever got, I think, maybe five, of shows that are never likely to be released. Despite their one-time popularity, western shows aren't very well served on DVD, and hardly at all in the UK - even Rawhide, in perhaps the most surprising example given Clint Eastwood's continued popularity, hasn't had a single episode released here. I did import Season 1 of that, but their splitting later Seasons into two volumes made importing the rest out of my reach.

I'll have to see if I can find a friend that has that set, and ask them what they think of the quality. Not sure how quickly (or if) they would answer, but I'm willing to ask <grin>.
The new DVD *is* pretty expensive, I'll admit that. I thought it was worth it, but I didn't have to pay any import fees...
Someone said that the quality is "iffy". Some are alright, others are horrible. They did suggest trying to watch the first two seasons on thevirginian.net or timelessmedia.com. Just a thought, if they are available in your area (and the sites haven't "locked" out other countries).
Well, I couldn't stand it anymore, and took the gamble. I just bought the 9 seasons of 'The Virginian' and expect the set soon. I know the quality won't be perfect, but it beats dragging out 9 seasons over how many years? And who knows if they will even issue all 9? The ones I bought are listed as being 'region free', so those who need a region other than what the US has should be able to play them. This company has a guarantee of returning your money if not satisfied. They even promise to replace a disc that is damaged. I'll post my satisfaction when I get the set and try a few.
