Trampas' clothing

Was the combination blue shirt/tan vest a part of the character Trampas or the color scheme actor Doug Mclure preferred wearing. Trampas seemed to wear this scheme more than others.

I don't know the answer to that, it would seem to me that Doug was comfortable in that combination. Funny, he and The Virginian always wore the same combination of clothing thru out the whole series. Anyone have any better answer, maybe from The Virginian book?

There are shows where The Virginian wore different clothing. In the first season particularly, he wore a blue shirt under his vest a few times, and a white and black check shirt (then there were the "travel" shows, where he wore his shiny blue suit).

I think Trampas nearly always wore the bright blue shirt. I always presumed that it was because the blue looked very good on him, and it made his eyes that much bluer (as example, look at a show where it's supposed to be cold, and he's got his tan coat on, his eyes almost look washed out).

Wearing the same clothing a lot allowed the editor of the show use stock footage of riding, for example, instead of having to shoot every scene fresh every week. This was done a lot on "Bonanza", "Gunsmoke", "Have Gun, Will Travel", and, notoriously on "The Adventures of Superman".

I loved the blue on Trampas, plus it's my favorite color. There was also the occasional "go to the dance" suits that they both wore. The stock footage of riding works well, especially with budgets back in the day. It also accounts for why I noticed numerable times when Trampas is riding Buck, the scene will cut back and forth from Buck wearing his bosal, then to a bit and then back to the bosal, lol. Continuity was not that important back then apparently. Raising horses as we do makes me notice things like that. My husband also noticed that many of the vests the cowboys wore were not designed to actually meet in the front, there was no way they could be buttoned, they always had to hang open. My personal favorite vest was the cowhide one that Randy wore. I'd love to have that one!
