Sheriff Ryker In Season 4

There seems to be a continuity error with regard to Sheriff Emmett Ryker in Season 4 of 'The Virginian'. In such early episodes as 'A Little Learning...', he is clearly Sheriff Ryker, but in a later episode called 'The Laramie Road' he is deputy again and only becomes sheriff when Sheriff Brandon (I think he's called) is killed. Did anyone else notice this?

I think this is a catchup more designed to show how he became Sheriff. And I'd say like a lot of shows, the epesode wasn't shown in sync or as recorded although I could be wrong.

HI guys i just like to say my favorite episodes of this series is with clu gulager as deputy sheriff Emett Ryker. the best of all was the first one called RYKER i thought that episode was brilliant, mabey no one agrees but i think ryker added to the show. now i still think the virginian and trampas are brilliant of course.

Just viewed an episode Jan 3rd here in Aussie, which was from Series 3,episode 15 titled "A Man Of The People" and Clu was the Sheriff in that one.
Still yet to view the episode where he changed from working for the Judge,to Dep.Sh. or Sheriff...
In true hollywood tradition,i might not see it !! :-)
Happy New Year All....

Best Wishes
Noel.

I am watching the show right now and I did not notice that. To answer your question, I think sometimes they would shoot shows out of order and they probably just slipped up when it came to his title.

I was amazed when I saw them kill the sherriff. This gave Ryker(Clu Gulager) a great episode in which he is not sure of himself. I moved on to the next season where Clu was not in the credits. He did, acccording to the IMDB appear three times in that season and then he returned for one more season the next year.

My problem is they killed off the Sheriif and then he returned the next year and continued to be the sheriff the rest of the series run. I liked that character, but they should have not had such a powerful episode that killed him off. I can only assume they thought Clu would stay on and they could use him. I wonder if he had a personal problem that kept him off the show that next year.

I am watching the final year right now and the sheriff is still that same guy they killed earlier.

They didn't kill off the original Sheriff- he was very badly injured, but he never died, this might explain what is worrying you.

Sheriff Brannan did die, though. In The Laramie Road, Ryker talks to Velvet Rose, who had taken him out of town (on a picnic of sorts). He wants to kill the two men (Crouch and Lightfoot), because they killed the man who was nearly a father to him. He only comes back to Medicine Bow, because he knew Brannan wouldn't have left.

reply

However Brannan did come back and not in out of sequence episodes. If you read the Virginian book the author stes the Sherriff was not dead, only badly injured. I have the episode where he is badly injured and has to "retire", a season or so later after Ryker has gone then Brannan is back! Hmm--- a continuity problem, too many different writers perhaps?

reply

According to imdb, Harlan Warde (Sheriff John Brannan) never played the character again after The Laramie Road (he only played him in 5 episodes). I remember Mark Abbott (Ross Elliot) leaving and coming back, but not Brannan.

reply

I reckon you have hit the nail on the head there. I think the author confused the 2 characters. I do recall Abbott getting wounded and now you say that I think that you are spot on. Thanks for that.

reply

I only remember it so well because I really did adore Ross Elliott, I was heart broken when he left (and I believe he was wounded).

*AND*, I just saw Road to Laramie a few days (week?) ago, so I remember the scene with Velvet Rose and Ryker very clearly (because I thought she was "in" on something with the townspeople). I was pretty happy to be wrong about that.

reply

Ross Elliott was a great actor. He did so much and was really versatile. Always liked him.

reply

Yeah, I'm watching that episode now and, since they buried Brannan, we can only assume he was dead....if he wasn't dead, just think of the lawsuit he could have brought.

I am CLU's age and this is the second time around for me and it he is better than I remember.....The Western Channel is showing them out of sequence now...therein lies the problem.
By the way,I saw Mr.Gulager a few months ago and he still looks tremendous.
