I never missed an episode in the 60's and NEVER miss one on THE WESTERN CHANNEL now.
My point, does anyone recognize the decency, professionalism and magnificence of The Virginian,Cheyenne and countless other Westerns from that era.....compared to the SMUT that appears on the BIG and SMALL screen in today's
poor excuse for entertainment.
ANY OPINIONS OUT THERE?

I agree, there aren't any good westerns any more. I liked the tv series Magnificent Seven but it did't last long either.

I see very few of today's movies, and almost none with a rating about a PG-13. It's not the sexuality I find disturbing, but the gratuitous violence - even in so-called "kid's" movies.

Also, I find most of today's actors eminently forgettable. I can't tell one apart from the other which is understandable when a few surgeons do the majority of plastic surgery in Hollywood.

I enjoy literate scripts which are sorely lacking today. The stupider it is, the more popular, it seems.

I'll second your opinion, with one caveat... Ever notice that Cheyenne was *never* wrong. On the occasion that he sided "incorrectly" it was always a woman who misled (lied to) him?

Paladin chose the wrong side, once in a while, as did The Virginian. They would stick with their "choice" as the right thing to do (you give your word, you stand by it), but they did make mistakes. They were less heavy handed with their messages as well.

I am *really* enjoying The Virginian on Encore Westerns. A *lot*!

I agree, they kept their promises not like todays movies they have no value or message behind them. It's all action and no real life story. Back then a man's word was his honor and a hand shake was all that was needed to seal a deal. Now if there aren't a list of lawyers to write contracts that people can't read forget it.

reply

@Wildcat84... Even if there *is* a contract, many people walk out on them. Completely annoying. It seems so weird that people are surprised when one keeps a promise made, these days. Sad state of affairs, all the way 'round.

I think a western set in the modern day (perhaps a big ranch in Wyoming) but reflecting the morals and values of the classic westerns would be a big hit. I think a lot of people are starting to tire of all the medical and law enforcement procedural shows. People are looking for something different and
would flock to a modern day western.
