David Hartman On The Virginian'

Does anyone on this board have a take or opinion as too Dave Hartmans role as 'Dave' on The Virginian?.. In my humble opinion, to me he didnt add much too the series. 1 reason 'His trained Broadcasters Voice' The way he talks just aint cowboy too me. I suppose his being on "Good Morning America" so long, just type cast him as a ' DJ trained voice, that they all sound alike to me'. The episode yeaterday with guest "Peter Duel" in 'The Price Of Love' was the 'saddest & most meaningful' 1, I believe I have enjoyed on the series. I didnt enjoy the ending at all. But his Love & Dedication to Mr. Clay Grainger was something else. But it was just the wrong way to show it. But as He told Mr. Grainger. 'It was all he had to show for "His Price For Love". Happy Trails Amigos:

Its just the cowboy way.

You know, when you look at the time he was brought in, alot of shows were trying to go for a bit of humor. I really think, even in his "serious" shows, they wanted some fun. Vietnam was highly unpopular, society was in uproar over things.

I don't much care for the character, but I do enjoy the humor. They should have brought him in the role he played in The Masquerade. The milquetoast bank clerk, who pretended to be a Sheriff to make his daddy proud.

I rather thought that show (The Price of Love) was not as well done as earlier ones, with similar themes. It was a bit melodramatic (to almost being funny). Duel is quite the actor (or rather was). Of the "Grainger Years", this one has been the best to date (imo).

you are right about the quality of shows. Like any TV series you have some episodes that are better than others and some that are clunkers, I have watched almost every episode of The Virginian on Western Channel since January and they do have some clunkers. I thought the 2 episodes with Pete Duel were good, they showed his range as an actor, something Alias Smith and Jones didn't.

he was just starting out as an actor, his gangling character did add something different. He was much better in his next 2 series, The Bold Ones and Lucas Tanner.

I was very pleasantly suprised by Hartman in this series. I normally think of him as a goofy TV personality and rater irritating. This is not the first thing I have seen him in, but I think it is the one I have enjoyed the most. Pete Duel was awesome. You just hate when suicide takes someone with such promise.

My husband and I are watching an episode that features Dave, Death Wait. It is a stupid episode! It was totally illogical. And we LOVE The Virginian. My husband constantly remarks about the excellent writing, but the story and writing in this episode were not good. It wasn't the character or the actor's fault. It is the material that the actors had to deal with.

I too think of Hartman as a goofy TV personality, although he hasn't been on for years. It's too bad that Hartman wasn't on the show when they had the wonderful writers.
