Agreed SB...He had a second career with the low-brow humour but that doesn't diminish his performances earlier in his career. I just saw the "Long Ride Home" on Encore Westerns last week and was surprised at how good he was as young Jim's mentor.
I also remember an episode of "The Fugitive" in which he was excellent also. He has always played "not-so-good" guys very well, but he has shown that he could handle just about any type of role.
Even in the buffoonish "Airplane", not too many actors could deadpan a line and make it so funny as:
"Rumack: You'd better tell the Captain we've got to land as soon as we can. This woman has to be gotten to a hospital.
Elaine Dickinson: A hospital? What is it?
Rumack: It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now."
And, don't call me Shirley!!
"I'm trying to live forever. So far, so good."
