I have noticed more recently that Doug's hair color as Trampas changed many times from blond to light brown and even dark brown during the long running series. Any reason for this? The Virginian was also popular in New Zealand although color arrived later here so I remembered it as being black and white. Trampas was always my favorite.
Back in the 1960s I think Doug McClure would have been in his mid 20s to his mid 30s, and I think his real hair color was blonde. Until my mid 20s, my hair color was mostly blonde, but then Mother Nature took over and started changing it to light brown, and then slightly darker brown. At the beginning of my 60s, my hair color sort of changed back to blonde again - that's my story, and I am sticking to it.
Getting back to McClure's slight changes in hair color from blonde to light tan or brown, he may have been going through natural color changes from summer to winter. I know my light colored hair of the winter months would really turn very blonde with the daily exposure to the sunshine of summer. I suspect McClure's hair could also have easily changed shades of color from summer to winter in those early years of the show. In the later years of the series, perhaps Mother Nature also darkened his hair, but it was all good. I'm pretty sure, however, McClure's hair was most likely all his rather than an wig.
During the run of "The Virginian", I, too, noticed that Trampas hair color seemed to change shades. Then, I discovered that my little sister was fiddling with the color dial on our TV.
You folks out in Utah were obviously way ahead of us out here in Pennsylvania. I never knew you folks had color TV back in the 1930s; it must have been great for you to be a kid back in those days. Judy and I bought our first color TV about 1972, and come to think of it, we never even had B&W TV until about 1952. Wow! I never knew Utah was so advanced.
Seriously, Farnsworth really was an interesting guy.
We did have a color TV when I was a kid (it was painted red), but reception was spotty in the 30's as you might guess. In fact, we never could get a picture, just sound. Then I discovered it was only a radio and I was listening to Jack Benny.
