The Brazen Bell

George C. Scott's schoolteacher character is at one point reads a poem, The Ballad of Reading Gaol by Oscar Wilde. Wilde wrote it in 1897 and Google says it was first published in 1898.

That seems to present a timing problem for The Virginian, which I would have guessed was set maybe 10 or 15 years earlier in the 19th Century.

Yup, they played pretty loose with the timelines on many of the TV westerns. Gunsmoke is one that ran 20 years and drives the purists insane because it didn't strictly adhere to a historical timeline.
