What do you think was the most revealing Virginian episode ever?

The Barren Ground (1967) gets my vote. It explains a lot about our hero the lead character.

I never saw that episode, but I did see the one about how Trampas ended up at Shiloh.

I just watched the episode, A Little Learning...which seemed pretty boilerplate with the exception of a young Bruce Dern showing his future crazy man act that he did so well, until the end, which I just don't get and hoped you might help me with..the school teacher who was a former saloon gal..and married secretly to the recently released from jail, Bruce Dern, has all the guys in town crazy about her..except for 1 man, Rafe, who wants her to teach him to read..so he can read his deceased mother's journal..He is the epitome of the Gentle Giant..so once everything gets settled down, Bruce gets killed..the real culprits are found out..the school teacher feels it best to leave town..and the man student, Rafe, takes her bags to the station..leaving her alone with the Virginian..and, she reads a beautiful passage to him that Rafe's mother wrote about her husband, Rafe's Dad...The Virginian looks at her sadly..and says...the Dad's name was Rafe..and she looks stricken..and throws the diary in the fireplace to burn..I did not get it..can you help?

I think the mother must have had a affair and was writing about her lover and not her husband.
