How long was each episode of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson?

I didn't start watching the show until the 80's but I think I remember it being 90 minutes long but maybe I'm not remembering it correctly. What made me think about it was watching reruns on AntennaTV. Some of the episodes are 90 minutes while others are 60 minutes. Perhaps the 60 minute episodes on AntennaTV are edited from 90 to 60?

Can someone help? Thanks!

Thank you for clearing it up for me.

And in another contract negotiation, some years later, it went from 5x a week to 4.

I watched Jay -- was a big bone of contention too, bc my husband was a Letterman fan so we kinda switched off. Eventually I lost interest bc NO ONE came close to Carson.

I seem to recall that towards the end he was only doing 3 shows a week, with a rerun (Best of Carson) broadcast on Monday nights and Jay Leno guest hosting on Tuesday nights.

and I still never missed a show. ;-)

During that 3-day run, I remember him actually doing a Tuesday show once, and had Jay on as a guest. One of the first things he said in his monologue was, "It's Tuesday. What the hell am I doing here?"

When Carson began in October 1962, the show was 1 hour, 45 minutes. About 1965, many affiliates started cutting off the first 15 minutes to show a 30-minute newscast. Carson, not surprisingly got annoyed, and refused to do the first 15 minutes for about a year until NBC reduced it to 90 minutes to start 1967.
