Does Doc seem weird to anyone else?

First of all he has those outrageous outfits. Sometimes they seem OK and others they deserve the punchline they get.

Was he serious with those or were they made just so Johnny could make a joke about them?

I'm guessing that each one was custom made and was only worn once? If so, does anyone know what would have happened to it?

And then there is the banter. Especially when Doc fills in for Ed. He just doesn't seem natural in front of the camera. Sometimes it seems as if Doc is trying way too hard to be funny but doesn't quite pull it off.

Both. They were his own clothes but they were not custom made. He bought them from boutiques. He started wearing them as a young man because he hated how all musicians wore the same dull suits back then. He did like to provoke the reactions from Johnny. But he always dressed that way when performing.

Other than his clothes, Doc wasn't funny except for one time. There's a classic moment where and Johnny talked about Thanksgiving and Doc started making jokes about his divorce. He made Johnny laugh so hard that he cried. Honestly, I thought Tommy Newsom was funnier.
