Sad epilogue to Andy the Goose

The recently broadcast 1989 episode which featured farmer Gene Fleming and his goose, Andy, brought attention to Fleming's efforts to help a disabled goose born without feet to walk again. Fleming designed special shoes which helped the goose walk and paddle around in the water. Fleming made various other appearances with Andy, who inspired disabled children and others who were touched by the story of the goose and his owner's dedication. Tragically, Andy and his mate were kidnapped from Fleming's farm two years after this Tonight Show appearance; Andy's dismembered body was found shortly afterwards, while the female goose was never found. Fleming was devastated by this crime, but was moved by letters of condolence from fans, and also by a generous couple who donated a headstone for Andy's grave (which can be visited in Hastings, Nebraska).
