Probably an obvious answer to this
Often at the very end of the monologue, just as the show segues to a commercial break,
Johnny wiggles his fingers toward the audience while his arms remain at his sides. Was he signaling to turn the house lights up so he could take questions from the audience, or
did he go up into the audience to talk to them, or was there another reason for the
signaling?
