Doris Day! What in the world?!

She is on an episode from 1974 right now - clearly sans bra. Apparently very chilly in the studio...

Headlights are blinding!!

Who is the blond sitting in for Ed?

reply

Carol Wayne, the Tea Time Lady. I thought she did great. Shame what happened to her.

BTW, Johnny said he had been out for six weeks from an accident. He started to tell Carol Wayne, who claimed not to know about it, what had happened to him, but he never finished the story! Apparently he was in traction for a few weeks. Does anyone know what happened to him?

I thought he mentioned that somehow one of his nerves got pinched by his spine.

Damn, I'm good.

The irony of Doris and her nipples is that she supposedly turned down the role of Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate because she thought it was 'dirty'. Now 'that' would have been interesting casting.

Evidently, her television show had been off the air for over a year when she appeared on The Tonight Show so she must have been stumping for another showbiz gig (and maybe the reason for the nipples, which she sure seemed to be doing her best to stick out). I don't think it happened so I wonder if this is around the time when she just hung it all up and moved to Carmel-By-The-Sea next to Clint Eastwood.

reply

She was promoting her memoir.

"It's as if God created the Devil...and gave him...JAWS"

You know Johnny appreciated them...probably hurt his neck to see them. Another couple of days in traction.

I'm pretty sure Johnny made a sly comment about them when she came out...unless I misread it. The audience was hooting (so to speak) and Johnny sort of glanced down at Doris's chest and said "We're having a convention." Ie, her and the similarly-busty Carol Wayne sitting side by side.

What I liked about her was when she mentioned how not everyone takes good care of their pets and neglects them and therefore she ends up taking in strays.
It was also great that she mentioned that dogs and cats should be spayed and neutered.
So Doris Day is a woman ahead of her time for animal rights.
Awesome lady!

Damn, I'm good.

Just stoned out of her gourd.

You are thinking of Sandy Duncan.

reply

Well she had that shawl over it sometimes, but it slipped out of place in others.

Also, did you notice Rodney hitting on her at the end?

reply

To me, her playing with the shawl in attempts to cover up her boobs was actually designed to draw attention to them. As evidence, there were a couple of times she would seem to do the complete opposite when she would sit up and thrust her chest out. The only time I was even remotely paying attention to the interview was when they had a camera on her from the neck up. From any other camera angle, well, I just wasn't focused on what anyone was saying. I'd say she knew exactly what she was doing.

And I wonder if Rodney was saying to her, "Hey, you're alright. You must have been something before electricity. How would you like to earn $14 the hard way?".

reply

I loved how Rodney cracked Johnny up so much with his line about the nurse "getting in a few extra hits" on Rodney after he was born! That one really tickled Johnny's funny bone.

FYI, this episode was my favorite I've yet seen on Antenna, and probably one of my favorite episodes overall. Just a great 90 minutes of programming. Maybe the Tea Time Movie Girl should've filled in for Ed more often!!

reply

She was 50 at the time of that broadcast and absolutely beautiful. And a nod to the guy who must've kicked up the air conditioning a bit. Well played.

reply

Doris Day and Mariette Hartley should have went on together back in the 70s. Now that would have been a show.

reply

That reminds me. It was Senior Citizen's Day at Hooters the other day.
