Carrie Fisher interview-1983 part 1
Johny's introduction: "My first guest i am sure everyone knows, she has played, twice already, Princess Leia, the feisty heroine, in Return of the Jedi, this is her first appearance with us, would you welcome Carrie Fisher."
note: for some reason Carson is having trouble with certain words, stumbling over a few in the monologue, and once that happens, for some reason it gets contagious. He even stumbled in introducing Carrie.
Carrie comes out wearing a green knee high dress that is cut low in the front, and a floral jacket. she is smiling as she walks out, laughing good naturally about the intro gaffe.
Johnny and Ed kiss her on the cheek.
johny talks with her about his garbled speech
Carrie: "i had it a lot with some of the Sci-fi terms we had to say..'i have placed information vital to the survival of the rebellion into the memory system of this R2 unit'
JC: Give me that again, thats not easy."
CF: "I can't,....i would have long speeches in front of hologram screen, and you would just feel humiliated. And it was over and over..." she tries to say a line and garbles it...probably to make Carson feel better, or laugh.
JC;" You see the difference between motion picture is..we can't stop."
CF: " Oh no, you mean everyone is going to see this."
JC: "This goes out just as it is."
Carrie crosses her legs, showing off some pretty princess like gams
JC;" You told me.." Carson flubs some more words, he breaks out laughing and Carrie puts her head back and laughs. poor Carrie, she must be thinking, my first time on the Tonight show, everybody is watching and i have to deal with this.
JC: "I have 2 questions in mind, i was going to say that we had not met before, but then i was changing the question because i saw you sitting in a chair in 'make-up and you were saying you would try and not be nervous and i said why would you be nervous."
CF: 'I had never been on the show before and ..its..i do get nervous.."
JC;' But we did meet i understand some years ago in Las Vegas."
CF;" But i think i was about 13 years old, and i use to try and hard in Las Vegas, i don't think its appropriate to be in Las Vegas at 13...you really don't know what to do..the only thing i could figure to do..."
JC; "Was your Mother working there?"
CF;" Yeah, and i was in her act."
JC: "We should probably establish that you are the daughter of Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher. "
CF:"Yes..i was working in a night club act and i was 13, so there is not a lot for you to do, you can't gamble, so i would try and think up things to do ..page people by the pool, Adolf Hitler please , Mr Hitler please." audience laughs, " well, you're 13 , you want to...Greta Garbo." mimics looking around like the people at the pool would be doing.
CF:" You worked there, what would you do to make it interesting?"
JC: " I would sleep most of the day. How were you working in a night club act at age 13, was that allowed?"
CF: " I guess so, if it wasn't i am sure in trouble now. Yes, i worked from 13 to 16 in Las Vegas as part of my Mothers act."
JC: "What did you do in the show."
CF; 'I sang, i flung my cords around and so on." Carrie flashes that mega-watt smile of hers.
JC:" Lets get back to paging people."
CF: " i would page people..you do things like giving surprise parties for people whose birthdays it wasn't. then it was a real surprise. they start singing along and suddenly a cake starts coming toward them and they start to get..."
JC: "bUT its not their birthday?"
CF: " No. but thats the best surprise party you could ever have."
JC; " You have a weird sense of humor i like that."
JC: " When you grew up, and of course bot sets of parents are in the entertainment business. The average child must look at that from afar and say that must be glamorous, but when you're there you're not conscious of the fact, you are just the child of two people who just happen to be in the entertainment business. disk you know that you were in some kind of glamorous business ?"
CF; " Not till i started watching 'Father knows best' and i started thinking...now those guys..Mom doesn't come home on that show and wash body make-up off or wear sequins, or take off a wig. or things like that, something off here. But i did go to school with a lot of other kids who did the same thing, but there was Mrs Anderson making a roast, and my Mom was flinging a Mike cord. It was normal for me, but then at about 16 i went..i don't know..i thought everybody had movie star parents."
