Antenna TV already repeating episodes

I've already seen three episodes that I saw last year on Antenna TV. Kind of sad. I didn't think they'd be repeating shows already.

reply

I noticed that also. I remembered the policeman that needed a car from last year and it's on tonight.

reply

I was reading an interview with Carson done a couple years before he died where he said he didn't care about the old episodes. Yet, later in the interview, it stated that he personally selected those episodes to be released on DVD.

I wonder what Carson would have thought about the Antenna episodes. It's a strange thing and, frankly, I don't believe for a second he didn't care about the old episodes. If he hadn't, then he wouldn't have went to the lengths he did to preserve them (it's said it's the largest collection of old shows).

reply

I agree with you. NBC was wiping the videotape and reusing it until the move to Burbank when apparently Carson put a stop to that. I've seen the photos of him in the vault and all the videotapes have a "hold" sticker on them which I presume meant do not erase.

reply

It's ironic that, with very few exceptions, all of the old, truly classic NYC episodes were mindlessly destroyed by NBC, and the only ones still intact are the later, substantially lower quality LA shows.

In fact, I'm not certain there any complete, entirely complete NYC shows left, only the highlight segments.

reply

I doubt there are any complete intact shows from NYC unless maybe the museum of television or UCLA maybe has a few. It's really a crime that the networks erased so many good shows to reuse the videotape. NBC seemed to be the worst at this doing so even into the early 1980s according to some accounts.

reply

The erasure of old television show videotape to be reused for other, new shows speaks volumes as to what NBC thought of the older shows. It's true that some of them were pure crap, but who would know which were and which weren't? Quite obviously, NBC (seemingly more than the other two networks) viewed shows as nothing more than a way to sell commercials. It was exceptionally short-sighted, given the residuals that could be had later once the home recording industry spooled up.

My guess would be that the stoppage of videotape erasing coincides with when they figured out it would be more lucrative to put out the old shows for purchase to be viewed at home.

reply

There's at least 1 NY Carson Tonight Show that's intact. It's the one with Dean Martin, Bob Hope and George Gobel, where Gobel says "Did you ever feel like the world is a tuxedo and you're a pair of brown shoes?" And the reason it exists is that it was broadcast on Armed Services Television so it was recorded on film. I think it's on one of the Carson DVD in its entirety (but I'm not sure).

reply

It's not intact, and it's in Los Angeles before the show was moved there. A majority of the episode exists.

reply

I thought I noticed a repeat near the end of 2016! Haven't been watching recently because of the switch to 10 PM. Have they all been repeats?

Not including guest hosted or Weekend Tonight Show/Best of Carson episodes, I'm seeing that Johnny hosted 4,531 times! And we don't get a full year of un-repeated stuff??? Boo. At least they aren't showing Jay Leno episodes...YET.

reply

My guess is music clearances. I figure that cuts out at least 1/3 of the episodes that Carson hosted. Antenna TV has only shown a precious few episodes with musical artists who perform a song or two.

I actually wouldn't mind seeing some of the Jay Leno hosted shows as I enjoyed him and did as well when he took over after Carson left. I'll pass on any Joan Rivers shows though. I never cared for her. She always just irritated me.

reply

I'm not so sure about the music clearance thing. In another thread it was mentioned that Carson didn't much like current music (mainly it was dealing with the musicians themselves) and, thus, there weren't a lot of musical appearances on the show. Of course, some of the few times he had jazz standards played would probably apply.

But it does raise a good point about the more recent late night shows. Letterman, in particular, had a lot of current music acts on his shows and those are the ones that would likely have difficulty being shown. Likewise, I think just about every Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon ends with a current musical number.

reply

There may be multiple factors at work. My recollection is they had musical acts fairly frequently on the 90 minute shows. Less so on the 60 minute ones - after all, with the monologue and the comedy segment half the show is gone. But the powers that be today may not think many of those performers have modern appeal. Two that I've seen the performances included have obvious appeal: Frank Sinatra and Barry Manilow. Is there much interest in Steve and Edie, who were on quite a bit in the 70s? I was quite disappointed a few days ago that Eubie Blake's performance was cut; he is an important but underappreciated part of American musical history. Carson's taste probably didn't lean towards rock - though I remember he had Alice Cooper on and raved about his concerts.

We also don't know what the current rights owners are thinking. I've heard lots of stories of people trying to licence a small clip, but the owner thinks they have a gold mine and asks for a huge sum. So the prospective purchaser walks away and the owner gets nothing. Sometimes they may not know who owns the rights anymore, and then the lawyers advise to keep away. There ought to be a better system, but the corporate interests have been steadily changing copyright law for the worse over the past four decades.

reply

That's a fair assessment. After all, look how long it's taken to get the old show on air in its current state, omitting the words "The Tonight Show" almost entirely due to NBC's ownership.

It's also a good reason just about no old variety show has ever seen the light of day except on some highlight show or home DVD. I guess there's not much chance of ever seeing anything like the old Ed Sullivan show or even Letterman, although they've been playing some episodes of the old Jack Benny show and Burns and Allen very early in the morning.

In fact, I just saw a couple episodes of the old Joey Bishop show. It's nothing short of amazing how NBC didn't erase over Bishop's miserable show, yet thought nothing of destroying Carson's. Although I guess I can understand it, considering how the executive NBC dullards might actually think Bishop's show was worth saving, and Carson's was not. OTOH, maybe the key is whether a show was filmed or videotaped. That would really answer it all.

Speaking of which, I wonder if CBS erased over Sullivan's shows (with a few exceptions like the segments of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Doors). Likewise, I think when Ernie Kovacs was on NBC, they erased his shows, although his last work was on ABC and it was saved by his wife, Edie Adams, after Kovacs died in a car accident driving a Corvair station wagon.

I wonder if destroying shows by erasing and reusing videotape was just an NBC thing or a standard industry practice that the other networks did, too.

It looks like all the episodes are repeating now and i'm bummed about it. Out of thousands of episodes, it's sad they apparently only got rights to a limited quantity to cycle over. I hope i'm wrong and new ones start up soon. Until then, i'll just hop over to Laff channel for Roseanne episodes.

reply

Not true. I recorded all the shows last year so I know that Antenna TV is showing a mixture of repeats and new ones.

reply

I don't think that's correct because just in this past week alone, I recall seeing every episode played last year and changed the channel.

reply

Take January 13, 2017. Showed the episode from February 20, 1979. Fairly well known episode since Sally Field brought out the shaving cream.

Now search YouTube. Number of people post stuff from the Antenna TV Carson episodes. You'll find videos from the last couple days and you'll find at least a couple that pre-date Antenna TV episodes. But you'll find none that were posted in 2016 because the episode did not run last year.

Next new episode is January 25th. 1/13/89 with Robert Klein, Blair Brown, and Teddy Andrews.

reply

I stand corrected. Thanks for the information, but still it's getting too sporadic with new episodes if the next one isn't until 1/25.

By the way, how do you find out which upcoming episodes are new?

I'm aware of Antenna TV website guide, but does the network let viewers know it's not a rerun from 2016 or do you just go by your own memory when checking the listings?

It'd be a great idea if you (or someone else) can create a thread where you can post all upcoming "new" episodes for viewers to check so we can know in advance.

I'll tune into 1/25 but not happy about having to hunt and peck for "new" episodes airing. With literally thousands of episodes in the 20 year span available, i'm baffled the network apparently only got a limited number to run. I was under the impression almost all of them would be aired over a few years period before they'd ever start to recycle.

(I know about the whole music rights issue and why we don't see those episodes where artists perform, but I have also noticed a very heavy playing of the same guest stars which makes me wonder if it's also a "rights" issue with the actors and/or their estates...does the network have to pay residuals or fees to show certain celebrities and why we see many episodes with the same stars?....That perhaps these are the ones that "agree" to have their guest spots re-played?)

I e-mailed Antenna TV about repeating shows. They said this year will be mostly repeats with some new ones mixed in. Its a shame they won't or can't keep showing non repeats. There had to be thousands of these shows. I wouldn't mind seeing some of the ones with guest hosts either. I assume Carson entertainment is limiting these shows in hope they can sell ones not shown on DVD.

reply

What I wrote Carson Entertainment about the other year -- and they responded -- was that they should release like a USB stick filled with MP4s of the shows. Ie all one year/decade, etc. This was before they started playing on Antenna TV. They wrote back thanks for the idea or something like that.

reply

There were 364 shows last year. I recorded 353. Did not get 11 due to various problems.

I got the TV listings from Zap2it. Whether it is new to my collection is easy to figure out since I just check my hard drive. If it is not on my hard drive, I have to check other sources, like YouTube, to confirm it was not shown last year. An example would be the Robin Williams episode from '82 that was on Sunday or Monday. For some reason, I did not get it last year but other people uploaded it to YouTube so I know it was a repeat.

That said, it is something I did just for this posting. My DVR records every show and then I figure out whether it is already on my computer. I'm figuring it out sometimes a week after the airing. Not useful to people who want to know before the show is on TV.

But since we are already talking about this, I did compare things up to January 30th. Just going by my files, the January 26th show is also new.

Did get a surprise on January 30th. Zap2It shows that Carson is moving to 11 PM and they did not know what episode is being shown.

reply

Thanks for the new air dates. I've marked the 25th & 26th down so I remember. It seems like a lot of work figuring it out, and I think Antenna TV should really just put a small "(2016)" next to their repeat listings so we know ahead of time...or perhaps even "(NEW)" next to it for first run repeats.

If it's going back to 11pm i'd be so happy. I hate it airing at 10pm as it breaks up the whole evening sitcom block. I enjoy watching all the sitcoms together from 8 to 11 and then finish up with Carson before bed. If it's a permanent move back to 11, i'm a happy camper!

reply

I'm in central Ohio. Antenna TV has shown it here at 10 PM since the first day. Waiting to see whether this 11 PM move actually happens or is a mistake on Zap2It's part.
