how is the movie like the series?

i'm in my 20s and only just started the show (out of love for roger moore's bond films). i saw the saint movie with val kilmor when i was in high school and i was under the impression that it was based on this series but simon templer doesn't change his identity around like he does in the movie. the movie and the series don't seem to have much in common.

Erm, no. They both claim to be based on the books by Leslie Charteris but whereas Roger's series took Leslie's stories and adapted them pretty faithfully Paramount decided to opt for a period in the Saint's life that Leslie purposly didn't document and decided they knew far better.
