Bond v. Saint

I know that the man who play the Saint became Bond, but I still don't know who's the better spy? What do you think, please drop a line.

reply

Bond's got all the cool gadgets and cars

reply

I think Bond too.

reply

I agree with you guys, but the Saint was pretty cool!

reply

The Saint wasn't a spy, but if he had been, and had been working along side Bond, with all the same gadgets, I think he would have been better.

Bond doesn't really plan anything.
He's the type to take things as they come.
Frankly that wouldn't work in the real world.
The saint on the other hand was intelligent.
Wasn't ruled by his dick.
And meticulous planner.
The theif is smarter than the 'spy' this time.

Good point. For those who don't know, "The Saint" wasn't a government spy,
he was instead operating on his own -- and outside the law. He always fought
for what was just and moral, but wasn't above keeping the crook's loot for
himself. He also did work for hire. Why did he do this? Because he found it
interesting. (He didn't need the money.)

I also agree with a subsequent poster who pointed out that Simon Templar
put much more planning into his work. It would make him the better "spy" --
all other things being equal.

they are the same guy u just don't realize it

First of all The Saint is not an agent, he is an adventurer a buccaneer.
That's what I like about him. He is a Robin Hood fights the big bad guys to help the little man.
And he is always charming and ahead of everybody, he is never out-tricked.
And it is all done so fine that you can watch it without think that's impossible. Mainly because they kept Leslie Charteris spirit alive in all episode. So most of the plots and stories are quite good too.
Only the Avengers is a better series, at least some seasons.

Now: the early Bond films are pretty good. But they should have stopped when Connery stopped. Don't get me wrong Moore and Brosnan are good Bond's.
But Ian Fleming wrote his books in the fifties and sixties, that is Bonds time.
Just think how impossible it is. Bond in the 90s means an at least 70 year old Bond. But most of them are not too bad films. If there have been made good films after the 50s!?

reply

I agree that Simon Templar and James are the same guy, but different characteristics. I can't really choose one over the other.

reply

ian fleming was influenced by leslie charteris so there wouldnt be muchdiffrences. but i think simon templer is a more interesting character and doesnt rely on gadgets.

reply

I prefer The Saint. He is so smart and smooth. He doesn't kill people, he doesn't even use a gun, but he had a few good fighting moves for his time, at least. He can manage almost anything. I wish I were that smart:)

007 is the spy (in her Majesty's Secret Service), while Simon Templar is an entirely private and adventure prone person, a detective quite often.

I feel Roger Moore was better as The Saint than as James Bond, and this might have happened because many of The Saint stories and dialogues were better than their Bond counterparts. The best of Moore's Bond films are, I believe "For Your Eyes Only" an "The Spy Who Loves Me", while most of the black and white Saint's episodes and some of the color ones have excellent plots, dialogues, and acting.

Sean Connery is a more complete actor, has presence and great confidence (what makes a man sexy !), but I like Moore's unique English demeanor, look, and voice !

Roger Moore, the Englishman will always be one of my favorite actors !
