I just got the black and white boxset. Have never really seen this series, although I've been aware of it for years. But decided I wanted to check it out after enjoying reading The Saint In New York. From what I read, I gathered that the black and white episodes are at least slightly better regarded.
Although I'm still early into my viewing, so far I've been impressed. It feels more like a well made mini thriller movie each episode, instead of the more formulaic adventure story of the week that can make later ITC series a bit of a chore to watch too much of for me. In the first commentary, they say that they always shot the episodes like a movie and this comes across to me. Despite being mostly studio bound with a few location establishing shots, it does feel more like a crisp and sharp black and white movie to me in each episode. It feels more international and more gripping to me than later ITC shows and feels more like a good American crime thriller or a good BBC serial. I'm really enjoying Roger Moore in the role of Simon Templar and I love the talking to the audience bit at the beginning of stories (something that could very well have been a disaster of course and may divide some people).
Glad you're enjoying your b/w boxed set of The Saint. Yes, it truly was a fantastic series. Can't wait to get my b/w set in the New Year, to add to my colour series boxed set!
And - wow - didn't he have some beautiful girl co-stars in each episode!
Yes, I could see I was in for a treat with beautiful co-stars just from looking through the accompanying episode guide booklets. An impressive selection.
I'm borrowing the b/w box set from a friend. So far I have enjoyed what episodes I've seen already though and I love Roger Moore in the role. I suppose I can't really expect a TV show to be as violent as some of the things depicted in a novel like The Saint In New York but there are still some good action scenes and I enjoy the noir feel that many episodes have.
