The most unbelievable adventure show of all time.

One hour after they met him, every woman he ever encountered fell hopelessly in love with him. Of course, by the next episode they were gone and never seen again.

What's more, he always let women crooks get away unless they were murderers. It never occurred to him they might continue being crooks, get caught and then tell Scotland Yard, "You want Simon Templar really bad. He let me escape, knowing I was guilty of (whatever). Give me a deal and I'll testify against him and you can send him to prison for aiding and abetting a fugitive, withholding evidence, and accessory after the fact to my crimes."

Very true it is unbelievable, and ridiculous.

But at least Roger Moore as The Saint was actually good looking.

Compare this to 'The Big Sleep' 1946 where bookshop girls, taxi drivers, waitresses and even rich heiresses were literally throwing themselves at short, shabby, grubbly looking, plain unattractive Humphrey Bogart!!!!!

reply

That's because all the handsome guys like Robert Taylor and Tyrone Power who'd been in the service fighting in WWII hadn't gotten discharged yet.

Humphry Bogart was still able to bag a 19 / 20 year old Lauren Bacall in real life, without much problems.

reply

Humphrey Bogart was a wealthy, powerful. world-famous actor, not the shabby loser private detective he often played. Do you think Bacall would have looked at him twice if he was an insurance salesman or even a real private detective?

reply

This is compared to the totally believable James Bond franchais, the rational Die Hard plotlines i assume? Let's not forget Lethal Weapon and t.v's Starsky & Hutch and Charlie's Angels, all three of which must be based on fact! Come on! The Saint is only a bit of fun! Enjoy it as such..the wobbly sets i particularly look forward to laughing at!

reply

With all those characters, the bad girls usually stayed bad. The Saint turned villainesses over to the side of good. By the way, John McClane is not made out to be a great lover. Sure I know it was all in fun, but I don't think Moore was very good at playing it for fun. It was just done too fast. Even Bond took longer than him to win over a woman.

reply

With the exception of the Bond films, none of the others had women falling madly in love with the heroes within a couple of hours. Bond was a film franchise with intervals of at least a year. The Saint was every week. Sure it was all in fun, but it got to be a bit much. Also, none of those other TV or film heroes let the women criminals get away.

reply

And no other series employed some of these same plotlines? ;) I can think of so many series where there were oneshot ladies for the leading men. It was just a thing shows did.

reply

I grant you that, but they always seem to fall for him the fastest. At least the other heroes usually didn't let the woman crooks escape. Usually he only turned in murderesses.

They all did back then. I agree The Saint was hardly a trailblazer in that regard.

No blah, blah, blah!

reply

What annoyed me wasn't the one-shot leading ladies, which were indeed common back then. What bugged me was that after knowing him only a few hours, most of them fell madly in love with him. That wasn't so common.

reply

In other shows, it was just a mutual attraction. In The Saint they went crazy over him.

reply

In S6E6 The Double Take, Annabel One is obviously an accomplice in the whole conspiracy, but she just got away free at the end.

reply

As I said, he usually let the women criminals go free unless they were murderers or traitors.

reply

And he does that again in The Angel's Eye.

reply

This is actually the reason why I liked The Saint and James Bond movies so much.

reply

But wasn't Templar a gentleman thief?
