Question On a Crew Member Well Sort Of ?

How did Takeo 'Fuji' Fujiwara become part of McHale's group

reply

Fuji was captured by McHale and the crew, but they decided to keep him around because he was a great cook.

reply

Fuji is already "on board" in season 1, episode 1, and I don't think they ever explained how he got there. (Well, maybe a sentence or 2, but there was no plot item about it.)

reply

i seem to recall it mentioned that Fuji surrendered himself, tired & hungry, to the crew after they moved onto the island.

reply

Fuji was found by the crew in the jungle, starved and lost, and was so pitiable they made him one of their own; further he could cook and make great saki. A subtle and rare "war is dumb" moment in an pre-Vietnam era show!

reply

Fuji was more of an ally than an enemy...sort of like Schultz was in "Hogan's Heroes".

I wonder if Fuji experienced mixed emotions whenever Lt. Comm. McHale and his crew came back from a patrol and they mentioned to Fuji that they had just killed 60 or 70 of his fellow countrymen as a result of destroying a Japanese submarine?
