Granny and the frogman

Jesus, were they really that desperate for storylines by that last season? That thin, one-episode plot is stretched out for NINE episodes! And that guy who played Mark seemed way too old for Elly.

In fact, Donna Douglas was 6 years older than Roger Torrey. But Donna was so young looking , and her character was supposed to be in her 20s, that she did seem much younger than Torrey. She was 37 or 38 when Torrey appeared in the shows.

I agree, the storylines were awful the last couple of seasons. And though he looked in pretty good shape, Torrey died in his mid 40s.

I had heard that originally Roger Torrey had auditioned for the part of Jethro. Since Torrey played a straight man in his role as Mark Templeton I wonder if he had been cast as Jethro instead of Max Baer the character of Jethro would have been much different or would Torrey have portrayed the character of Jethro in the same comedic way as Baer did.

Yeah, the character Jethro was supposed to be the minor character of the show. Just a big naive kid. But then his character evolved, I assume because the show because so popular and he was made pretty much the "star" of the show. I have a feeling the creators of the show had no idea the show would be as popular as it was.

I have no idea what kind of actor Roger Torrey was, if he could have done that kind of comedy Max Baer became adept at. I have a feeling if Torrey were Jethro, the series would not have lasted past the first season or two.

I heard that originally Jed was supposed to be an idiot...But Buddy Ebson refused to do the role unless Jed could be played with some sense....I heard a lot of his original lines were given to Jethro.

Other Changes:

Originally Bea Benederett~sp ~Pearl~ was to be Granny., They were to move to a New York Penthouse rather than Beverly Hills, So yeah they show was to be a lot different.
