Someone must've disconnected it after season one, as everyone had to knock for the rest of the series' run.

I seem to recall an episode where Jethro tells Jed he asked the teacher at his school where the music came from, and she told him.

I just happened to see that episode today as I record the show off of antenna TV. Jethro explains how the bell works by chimes being hit...etc. He tells Jed there's a button that's pushed. Still, he assumes someone on the roof sees the visitors coming to the door and pushes the button and he wants to catch him.
The first season is HILARIOUS!
