Groceries

How did they buy groceries? I think there was a Thanksgiving episode where Granny went to the store and bought food for Thanksgiving. The cashier told her that the total was something like $25.21 and Granny, being used to country store prices back home was confused and gave the woman 25 cents. Then she thought the woman was insulting her when she said "You are short." Dd they only eat food they grew or hunted for?

They mentioned once that Pearl sent them things from the Hills.

But Jethro ate Corn Flakes which they had to buy,or am I remembering wrong? Pearl must have shipped food in a I n a daily basis the way Jethro ate.

Accoridng to the Kellogs Corn Flake commercials, they also got corn flakes back in the Hills, as Pearl was eating them once in her kitchen. SO I'm guessing in the Hills they had general stores, so I guess the understood the concept of shopping for little things.

One assumes Pearl shipped grub like possums, squirrel gizzards and the like.

May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?

reply

There was probably a nearby corner store where they got things like corn flakes.

reply

I would assume Drysdale had someone deliver groceries. With their money he could easily get a shopping list and have it dropped by.

Corn flakes were basic cereal. Sugar cereals were late to the game and may have been considered a luxury.

Cereal aisle back even in the 1960s would have been half or less what you see now. But you could always count on corn flakes, rice krispies, oatmeal, cheerios, shredded wheat, and not a whole lot more.

Small stores (imagine Petticoat Junction's Mr. Drucker's store) would have had few cereal choices with corn flakes being one of the few choices.

I do remember stores like that existing into the early 1970s until owners died and families wanted nothing to do with them so they closed forever.

Back in the '60s we had a "variety" store ("convenience" stores were unheard of yet) in our neighborhood that included Cap'n Crunch and Frosted Flakes on their limited cereal display.

It seems like on Green Acres once Eb was eating a new sugery cereal that came out and Oliver was surprised...he made some comment like, "When did they start making cereal sweet?"

reply

Yes it seemed to be implied that Pearl would ship them only the "foods" they couldn't get in Beverly Hills, like crawdads, owl eggs, possums etc. I assume they were shipped in dry ice, or perhaps salt which would be easier.

The "regular" foods like cereal, milk, coffee, flour, etc were likely delivered daily. It seemed like the foods from Pearl were foods for special occasions, while on normal days they would have chicken, ham, veggies, etc.

When they moved in the kitchen and pantry were pre-stocked by Dryesdale and Miss Jane. Several episodes later they were given a tour of the California agricultural areas and shown the supermarket. At this point in the show they weren't yet so stupid they couldn't figure it out. The food packages from Pearl were "specialty" back-home foods not readily available at A&P.

In fact they did a whole ad campaign about "the vittles growing industry" with a catchy jingle somehow integrated into one episode sang by the cast.

"Thanks to the folks of the vittles growing industry,
The vittles selling industry,
Food is a bargain, eatin's getting easier
And much more fun!"

And of course, in a pinch there was always the widowlady Beverly Caterer who would bring over some ham or such.

Just today there was the episode where Jethro is pretending to be Robin Hood, and he "robs" the refrigerator of all the food. Later when Jethro was eating it, it was clear he was eating fried chicken (among other goodies).

Anyway in the episode Jed, Granny, and Drysdale and Hathaway have bags of groceries Drysdale helped get, to refill the fridge. This apparently was not a normal occurrence, as Drysdale revealed he bought the groceries charging Jed's account (and almost kept the trading stamps himself). So perhaps one of Jethro's and Elly's chores would be to weekly go to the store and buy groceries the same way, using the truck.
