The original 1961 film version of West Side Story will be re-released in selected movie theatres, nationwide, on Sunday, June 24th, at 2:00 p. m. and 7:00 p. m., and on Wednesday, June 27th, at 2:00 p. m. and 7:00 p. m. Fathomevents.com is a good website from which to obtain tickets online, or you can do it through Amazon, as well.
I've already bought my tickets for me and other people that I'm going with on those two days, and I'm very excited about it.
Even though it's a couple of months off, I'm very excited about it.
Neat-o!! Are you thinking of getting tickets? The more people go to see it, the better it will be for this great, golden oldie-but-keeper classic movie-musical, which is my all time favorite movie, hands down!!
It often depends on where one is, and the theatre in which a popular older film is playing. Many people don't go to the big cineplexes such as the Regal Cinemas or any other places like that, first because they charge a fortune, not only for the movies, but also for the concessions, which are often full of sugar and salt, and because the large cineplexes mostly play the newer, schlockier, junky and graphic films that are coming out these days and that are almost mass-produced.
"Grease" was part of the fathom Events just recently, and it sold out, rather quickly, so there's really no telling what may happen.
Upon attending screenings of older classic movies such as West Side Story and other older classic films at independent, non-profit repertory theatres, I have discovered that, while they haven't sold out, they are quite well-attended.
Back in the summer of 2013, I attended the Tanglewood Boston Symphony Orchestra/West Side Story (1961 film) concert, where the Boston Symphony Orchestra played a live rendition of the musical score to the film version of WSS, while showing a re-mastered, Hi-Def version of the film, five years ago, and, despite the addition of several extra lawn benches, that concert sold out! Word had it that there were at least 20, 000 people attending that concert. I'll be going again to that same concert, this July.
I purchased my ticket for the Boston Symphony Orchestra/West Side Story concert at Tanglewood this July (Tanglewood is the summer home for the Boston Symphony Orchestra.), and also made my hotel reservation back in mid-January, and was glad that I did so, because most of the hotels in the area were sold out for that particular evening, plus not long after I bought my ticket, the concert was pretty much sold out already.
Thanks for your input, modica. I can see where you wouldn't like big crowds. They can be difficult to deal with, at times. With me, however, it depends on the situation. For me, however, something as special as a showing of the original 1961 film version of West Side Story, however, is worth dealing with big crowds, whether they're in a movie theatre, or at Tanglewood.
Btw, do you live close to Tanglewood, or within driving distance of it? Just curious.
I, too, can drive to Tanglewood, from just outside Boston, MA. It takes roughly 2-3 hours for me to get there, depending on the traffic, and so on. I use the "Waze" app on my smart phone for long distances, which helps a great deal.
Thanks, modica! I'm really excited and looking forward to seeing West Side Story on a great big, wide screen, in a real movie theatre, with the lights down low. Glad you got your tickets early. It's better that way. Hope you have a great time!!
The ending of West Side Story, as sad as it is, is also kind of a double-edged sword. At the same time as the three deaths, that's what it takes for the Jets and Sharks to finally come to their senses, at least temporarily, which is indicated by the fact that several Jets and Sharks came together to carry Tony's body off after he'd been gunned down by Chino, and also by the fact that Baby-John, the youngest Jet, came over and gently draped Maria's black mourning scarf over her head and shoulders, while she was in mourning over Tony, who she loved, dearly.
The recognition by Chino's countenance is devastating. Now, for the last time he sees the life he'll lead ahead of him. He could not, he would not look prior to this blackest of nights. Now, Chino's life is as complete as Tony's.
You've made a very good observation of Chino's changed countenance and personality, Culburn.
Chino's whole countenance and personality underwent a profound change, not only out of anger and jealousy, due to the fact that Maria was not interested in him, but also due to the fact that Tony knifed Bernardo to death in retaliation for Bernardo's having killed his old, close buddy, Riff.
You're welcome, MichiganJFrogg. West Side Story will be playing on June 24th, and on June 27th, in select movie theatres, nationwide. You might want to look it up on Fathomevents.com, to see if it's playing anywhere in your state and/or general area. Hope I've been of some help here.
Thanks, MichiganFrogg. I'm a woman, btw. Out of curiosity, even though Michigan isn't the state that I reside in, I looked it up on fathom events.com. There are afew movie theatres in Michigan that are playing West Side Story on the afore-mentioned dates and times, as well. If you're interested, you might want to look it up, and buy tickets for yourself, friends, etc. Hope I've been of some help here.
Thank you for the link on the 1955 Warner Brothers cartoon about "One Froggy evening." That's a funny one. I was a child of the 1950's, and I used to watch a lot of cartoons, including Warner Brothers cartoons on TV as a preteen, but I don't really watching "One Froggy Evening" at all.
