Will you sleep with someone who just killed your brother?

Whether he did it in rage or not ?

And still love him? Still want to run away with him and left your heart-broken sister-in-law behind like she means nothing to you?

One thing I can't stand with this film.

Due to my intense love for the film West Side Story, this is a very hard question for me to answer, user-651-4371256. There is, however, a very important difference between a desire to do something, and actually doing it. In this instance, as strong as the desires of both Tony and Maria to run away to a place where "not anybody or anything" could get to them, I think that at some level, they both knew that these desires were merely pipe dreams; it simply wasn't going to work out for either one of them.

I also believe, however, that since Bernardo had pretty much arranged for Maria to marry Chino (which is why Bernardo, brought her to the United States, to begin with.), Maria had already developed a mind of her own and didn't want to be in an arranged marriage, plus she felt more attraction to Tony than she did Chino.

Yes, Tony did stab and kill Bernardo in rage and in retaliation for his having stabbed and killed Riff, thus revealing the old, original "street" Tony that still lurked underneath the surface, if one gets the drift.

Having said all of the above, to answer your second question, I do not know what I'd do if I were faced with a situation like that. The fact that West Side Story affectively asks such a question to the audience, imho, is partly why this classic film is so interesting and so strong.

reply

Well, thank you for your reply, but I still feel hard about WSS, maybe it was the whole set doesn't interest me. Like... Les Miserables is one of my favourate, with its much grander set: government corruption, starvation, revolution, and the undying love, courage and kindness during the hardest time.

As for classic tragedy, I am more into Vertigo, The Red Shoes, Children's hour, The Elephant Man, Amadeus, Grave of the fireflies.

You're welcome, user-651-437126. To each their own about West Side Story or any other movies. As much as I love this great film, I realize that West Side Story isn't everybody's cup of tea. In a democracy, people can still disagree and/or openly differ in opinions.

Hope I've been of some help here.

reply

Of course you have, I am so glad to talk to people like you, people have taste and don't insult the disagrees all the way down.

And I totally agree with you about the democracy issue. A year ago, I tried to recommand everyone I know to watch It's a wonderful life, my favorite of all time. But now i don't do that too often. Recommending old movie like that will just be like recommending Mexican food to someone don't eat spicy stuff.

reply

Hi, user-651-437126! Thank you for your input. I enjoy coming on here and having discussions with people like you also, because you seem to know how to disagree/openly differ in a civil manner.

I did watch the film It's a Wonderful Life several years ago, and thought that it was kind of overrated, but, again, it's to each their own. I have pretty much stopped recommending that people watch West Side Story for the same reasons that you stopped recommending It's a Wonderful Life to other people, but I still write my opinions of and talk about West Side Story, nonetheless.

Another thing I do, however, is to occasionally suggest to the proprietors/staff of the movie theatres in my area that I like to patronize is suggest/request that they play West Side Story or other older classics (West Side Story is my all time favorite film, hands down, btw!) as part of their repertoire. Sometimes that works, and sometimes it doesn't, if one gets the drift.

reply

Do you watch WWS often? It's a wonderful life is my all time favorite. But I have only seen it once. Because I am afraid that if I watch it too often. I would lose the great affection for it.

reply

Do you watch WWS often?

Yes, much to the amusement of my family and friends, I do watch West Side Story often. I go to see this great classic movie pretty much every time it comes to a movie venue/theatre in my area, and I've even made road trips to the opposite end of my state of residence, and neighboring states specially to view screenings of the film West Side Story.

I also watch WSS when it comes on TV, and I've also seen it on DVD or video, but absolutely nothing beats seeing West Side Story on a great big, wide screen, in a real movie theatre, with the lights down low, and with a whole slew of other people, whether one knows them or not.

I think more people than we're both aware of have favorite films that they see over and over again, but just don't want to admit it, lest they get branded as immature, or possibly worse.

By the way, I am a Chinese. You can't make advise about what movie to be release here and they don't play old movies at all. Shame......

reply

Well, have you tried calling, writing, or even emailing the proprietors of movie theatres in your area to suggest/request that they play older classic movies. What about getting your friends (if they, too like older classical movies) to do likewise?

Just a suggestion. Again, hope I've been of some help here.

reply

Actually... that's kind of impossible. It's not that they hardly play old movie, but they NEVER play old movie.

Maybe it's because that first, most people here care about money more than movies, since this is China, we don't have old Hollywood films to be released, if they do so, they have to wait until the government to approve the film and pay for it. Second, most people here don't even watch movie too often, only movies like Avatar or some teenage love movie can make money. They don't know how good classic movies are. Old movie will lost money for sure, I can totally imagine that I being the only person in the theatre when old movie is released. Pity!

With that being said, Chinese theatre is a money-making carnival, not an art gala. If I make that kind of advice, they would just think that I am CRAZY.

Still thank you, anyway.

reply

OMG, you may call me being overly sensitive, but please tell me you didn't stop replying just because I am a Chinese.

Maybe I've been over-thinking this, but I'll feel much better if you can just tell me that.

reply

user-651-437126, no--I did not stop replying to you because you're Chinese. You can rest assured of that. There are times when I don't post here on imdb.com for considerable periods of time, but I always come back. Hope that makes you feel better, and that I've been of some help here.

reply

You're sweet. I planned to move to USA after I make a success here, just for you to know, I am a student of Beijing Film Acadamy. I am so sure that movie is what I am about to do for the rest of my life. Hollywood is my biggest dream, And I will be there within a decade or so. I hope I can meet you in person.

reply

Thanks, user-651-437126, for your compliment. Good luck on your film-schooling!

reply

Well, here's the thing. She had told Tony to go and stop it. Maybe if she had just accepted the fist fight, Bernardo wouldn't have gotten killed. She is angry with Tony when he first comes in, remember? He is trying to explain why it happened and she believed him. She also is explaining to Anita why she loves him in the song I Have A Love.

reply

When people get excited or shocked, they do wild things, like still love the boy who killed your brother, but after a while, they would calm down, and start to think things over: How will I ever live with this boy? Under any circumstances, he IS the murderer of my brother, I don't hate him. But run away with him and left my family just like that?

However, it's just a movie. There will be no story if everything was so reasonable at the first place. So I just let it go by now.

Thank you for your reply.

This:

is entirely possible, stevenackerman69. Maybe Riff and Tony wouldn't have been killed, either. The ending to West Side Story might've had more closure to it, as well. Instead of just a ray of hope and a hint of reconciliation, there might've been a real reconciliation between the Jets and Sharks.

What you have to keep in mind that the plot is based on "Romeo and Juliet", in which Romeo does battle with Tybalt (if my memory is right) - Juliet's brother, and kills him in the heat of the moment, even tho that didn't seem to be his intent. If "West Side Story" had been more organic in it's origins, maybe the 'killing Maria's brother' subplot may not have been invented. It's hard to say, really.

I hope this sheds light on the matter.

Tybalt was Juliet’s cousin (plus, I don’t think she was that close to him, at least not nearly as close as Maria was to Bernardo), and Juliet had the excuse of staying faithful to Romeo because he’s her husband now. She brings up having a duty to her husband now she’s married to him in her lines after she finds out about the murder.
