Maria's reaction to Nardo's death

i don't know if this has been posted here before, but a thing that really bothers me about West Side Story is when Chino tells Maria about her brother's death and she's all like "yeah *beep* it, what about Tony?". I mean, she had just met the guy and still asks only for him? IT WAS HER GODDAMED BROTHER FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!

Maria isn't told about Bernardo's death until after she asks Chino about Tony. Chino tries to tell her that Bernardo is dead, but she interrupts because she thinks Bernardo killed or hurt Tony. When she finds out that Tony killed Bernardo, it shocks her and she has difficulty processing the information. Then her first reaction upon seeing Tony is "Killer! Killer! Killer!". I would say that her brother's death upsets her very much.

I agree with what you said, dmnemaine.

This:

is particularly telling, in that respect. Thanks.

I think Maria's reaction is what sent Chino off to kill Tony. Jealousy.

It was also a matter of retaliation, also.

Well remember, she asked Tony (who wasn't planning on even going to the rumble) to go over there and prevent it from happening. So when she hears one happened, naturally she is going to ask what happened to him. And he ends up being the one who kills her brother? Yeah, that one had to take a bit of time to process.

^ Well said.

She didn't know that Bernardo was killed yet. Chino is trying to explain what happened and is sort of scrambling for words and then she asks about Tony and Chino screams, "HE KILLED YOUR BROTHER!" and then leaves. That is when she first hears it, not before she asks about Tony.

I just watched this yesterday for the very first time

before that only bits
and I had the same reaction it looked like she didn't care about her brother and had only known Tony for such a short time

I do love this movie and feel it is the best musical in movie history

I watched West Side Story on TCM the other day, because it's my all time favorite film, and I watch it whenever it comes around.

It's possible that maybe the news of Bernardo's death took some time for Maria to absorb. I do think, however, that Maria did care about her brother, however. When Tony climbed into Maria's bedroom window and Maria began beating him and calling him "Killer! Killer! Killer! Killer!', that said something rather powerful right there, if one gets the drift. Yet, at the same time, she wasn't able to hate him and cast him out of her life, either. Maria's emotions were very mixed...and extremely powerful.

Friend - Just an FYI, but West Side Story is still on TCM On Demand where I live. Today is the final viewing day until midnight.
