Love does conquer all

West side story is a brilliant adaption of the classic ROMEO and JULIET.

Similarly the feuds between family rivals and a secret love affair. Gangs still co-exist today fighting for their territory in their neighbourhoods, just as the Jets and the Sharks did.
Even though they were taught to hate one another, unexpectedly Tony and Maria fall in love. When Tony kills Bernado and then Chino killed Tony thinking this would end their love, Maria shows that their love is eternal and no man could take that away.

Thats taking dying for the one I love to another level!
would ypu allow others to stand in the way of your happiness?

West Side Story is such a beautiful film! It has always been one of my all-time favourites. I saw it at the Artscape a few months ago and it was really good too!

I believe that true love will always conquer and should we be fortunate enough to have it, we must never trade it for anything else in the world! So to answer your question, NO! We should not allow others to stand in our way of happiness. Life is too short!

It's agreed that West Side Story (which is my all time favorite film, hands down!) is a very beautiful film, which does show that love can and does take root and develop across the ethnic, racial, religious and color barriers, which is something that that has always happened in real life, and happens today. The same is true with gangs fighting for and sticking up for their turf. Today, however, such fights over turf aren't fought with fisticuffs, switchblade knives, or even chains, but with high-powered automatic guns, which makes them even more deadly...and dangerous.

While West Side Story does prove that love does cross the above-mentioned barriers, and that disapproval on both sides does help bring two lovers closer together, the message has proved to be a double-edged sword. While love develops despite disapproval from both sides, that same sort of disapproval can also cause a love to go up in smoke, as well.

West Side Story, despite being fiction, also carries the message of how deleterious the consequences of racial/ethnic an cultural hatred can be and often are, and proves that arrogance, hubris and violence are definitely not a good thing, at all.

Yet, West Side Story also carries yet another message: That reconciliation between groups, as difficult as it can be and often is, can also be possible.

A very nice romantic POV. But how does love conquer all in this movie? It seems to me that love turns out not to be enough to overcome the cultural divisions. Perhaps Maria's love for Tony is eternal, but she's got a long life to live without him. Wouldn't you hope she finds another guy?

Thanks for the input, pontevedro. The message of West Side Story is definitely a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it proves that people can and do cross the racial/ethnic barriers to fall in love, despite disapproval, and yet, at the same time, it indicates that disapproval on one or both sides of the divide can and often enough destroys relationships, as well.

Love conquers all by bringing two people who could not be farther apart in life, together. The message is the same as in Romeo and Juliet...love brings us together, while hate divides and destroys us.

Other peoples hate destroyed Tony and Maria's chances of being together, but it didn't destroy their love for each other, which Maria will carry with her as she moves forward in life. One day she'll probably find love again, but Tony will always be her first love, and because of the way he was taken so violently from her..l think she'll always carry a hole in her heart for him.

That's a very good point, Weber4276. The chances of Tony and Maria were destroyed by envy and hatred, but the love still burned, brightly, although rather painfully, to boot.
