But oddly, I found Anybody's [the tomboy who desperately wanted to join the Jets gang] somewhat attractive. And it sort of appeared during certain interaction with Ice, that he was kind of 'looking' at her too. ( as in, "Man, if she wasn't such a tomboy... she'd be really cute") ... or at least garnering the girl a little respect, as compared to the rude, arrogant Jets.
I thought that the fact that Anybodys did finally get accepted as an equal by Ice and the Jets and large, and was ultimately allowed to join the gang was an indication that Anybodys was a strong, feisty, tough woman with tons of determination and grit.
When Ice finally said to Anybodys "Hey! Ya done good, buddy-boy!" and Anybodys got all dreamy-eyed when she said "Thanks, Daddy-o!" to Ice in reply, that mutual respect, and possibly love, was beginning to set in, if it hadn't already.
Additionally, when Ice was *dancing* with his Jet's date at the HS dance, and then later on, hanging with her a few times ... and when they catch up with the Jets (shortly before the big war-talk with the Sharks) ... and Anybody's continuously appears .... The snobby girls rudely dismiss her with that ridiculous "Oogilee Ooh" bit.. But Ice doesn't take his eyes off the attractive tomboy, and seems to want to intervene, but doesn't ... perhaps out of fear or caution that the gang (and the girls) might think something else.
I always somewhat pictured, that if warfare or situations were different, Ice probably would have 'hooked up' with Anybody's. There was a definite weird chemistry between them (alongside silent, mutual attraction)
You've made some very good and interesting points about Anybodys, and the tacit chemistry and mutual attraction between her and Ice. The fact that, at the end of the film, Ice was seen walking off with Graziella rather than Velma (who was originally Ice's girlfriend), also presents a rather interesting thing, too. Maybe Ice was under pressure from the rest of the gang (and Graziella and Velma, as well) not to make his feelings for Anybodys too obvious.
One thing about Anybodys, however, is that while I admired the fact that she had toughness, determinations, and grit, and was quite gutsy, as well, the way that she acted towards Anita in Doc's Candy Shop (sort of assisting and encouraging the Jets who were taunting and insulting Anita, and ultimately roughed her up, and were about to rape her when Doc came back in.) really did sort of detract from that from me, and it sort of sank Anybodys's good qualities under, if one gets the drift. Had Anybodys really used that gritty determination and gutsiness to stop the Jets from taunting Anita, she would've commanded even more respect and admiration.
I feel however, that Anybody's acted as she did (toward Anita) at Doc's Candy Shop, as all a facade. She honestly didn't *hate* the woman (nor the P.R.) like the rest of the gang, but had to prove her loyalty or initiation, in order for the Jets to accept her as an equal. Like reverse-psychology: I don't actually hate this person, or don't wish any harm toward him/her, but I can't let the rest discover that. Same as Ice hiding any feels he probably had for Anybody's :)
Ice hooks-up with the Jet's girl, for show - as Riff's RH. But he's obviously attracted or interested in someone else, but can't reveal it.
That, too, is an interesting point, oprivr33, and it's entirely possible that that's the way it was, but I sincerely think that when people feel that they have to act in certain (negative) ways in order to prove their loyalty and/or to be accepted as equals, that it does sort of diminish people's standards. Anybody was no exception, in that respect.
I don't think that Anybodys was necessarily a lesbian, especially given her dreamt-eyed look that she gave Ice, when she said "Thanks, Daddy-o", after Ice had said to Anybodys "Hey! Ya done good, buddy-boy!"
I think she is a lesbian. Notice Ice calls her BUDDY and BOY. And also she always wants to be part of the gang--one of the guys. Heck she even dresses like a guy!
Unless they showed her getting with a chick then you can't say she was a lesbian. It's annoying how people think tomboy is a synonym for lesbian when a girl is older.
"I'd rather lose for what I am than win for what I ain't"
I honestly never thought that Anybodys was a lesbian, really. It was obvious that she wasn't, when, after the rumble, when Ice takes over the Jets gang leadership after Riff's death, tells Anybody's "Hey! Ya done good, buddy-boy!", and Anybodys than responds to Ice's compliment "Thanks, Daddy-o", and gets all dreamy-eyed in the process!
He says that to her to signify that she is now a member of the Jets, I always thought. This is also said on the stage to her, but by Action, who was the leader after Riff was killed.
Yeah, interesting that she didn't object to what the Jets were doing to Anita, although she did a little taunting at the beginning herself. Maybe again, she was loyal to the Jets, and being a member, she wasn't going to object to what they were doing, but she wasn't going to actually do anything physical nor stop them.
Funny you brought this one up. I always thought she had a crush on all of the Jets for various reasons, but that when Ice gives her his seal of approval, she falls for him the hardest. I also think he liked her too. But he's too "cool" to really go for her type.
You're probably right about this JujusFlix, although I admittedly never gave any thought to the idea that Ice was too "cool" to really go for her type.
She had a bit of attractivness to her, I suppose. She wanted to be a gang member, but Riff didn't want her in the gang. When Ice took over, he accepted her because she had helped give them the news about Chino and that he is looking for Tony for revenge. She didn't have to do that. She just wanted to. In Ice's view, that was good enough for him to put her in the gang.
