Should Anita be present at the end?

I mean, I understand that she was greatly upset over the raping attempt earlier on. But, I personally felt she should have been there. Don't you think?

Hmmmmm....that's an interesting idea, but that's hard to know, because rape, or attempted rape is rather hard to forgive, if one has been the victim of such a crime.

I like that you brought this up. I always thought she was there - far in the background on the left side. I watched again tonight and I wasn't able to truly distinguish whether or not it was her.

Thinking in terms of the climactic effect of the scene - yes, I think she should be present in order to round out the entire cast, and have every emotion present.

In terms of the character - it could be argued that Anita should be there for Maria, that after the attack she should have gone to Maria and told her what had occurred. But, (again thinking in terms of the character) its possible, she wouldn't have even returned to Maria afterward, having (and understandably) given the false message about her death to the Jets. I'm thinking she went somewhere else, perhaps to compose herself, to press charges (doubtful), or more likely -to tell Chino... who knows? But I don't think she and Maria even crossed paths after the Jets harassed her. And of course, Maria was being questioned by the Sargent.
Still, yes, I still think, Anita (the character) should be present - if not to support Maria (her love's sister) in her grief, than definitely to see the outcome of her own hatred and rage. After all, if the Jets hadn't been so horrible to her, she wouldn't have told the lie that caused Tony to seek out Chino.

Your points are well taken, JujusFlix. It would've been kind of nice if Anita had been there for Maria, but she was still so stricken by the death of Bernardo at the hands of Tony, and the fact that Maria still loved him and stuck with him, until his death, in spite of it, that Anita felt that she couldn't be there.

The Nurse wasn't at the end of Romeo & Juliet--nor was Lady Capulet.

In the stage version, she is. I don't know why Rita wasn't there. I'd love to ask her about that. Maybe she hadn't been out when Chino shot Tony and was home cooling off from the attack she just had.
