On the cousin and the servant


I'm surprised this doesn't get commented more - this interaction is very transgressive on Viridiana's cousin's part. The having sex isn't, that would just be him acting as the alpha male, but playing cards with her and so forth - socializing with her as an equal rather than interacting as a superior - is very transgressive. The cousin rejects most social norms, not just on religion. Contrast this with Viridiana's self-appointed role as their benefactor - perhaps Buñuel is suggesting that job creation (Viridiana's cousin employs a number of workers that actually earn their keep) and less distance between the various social classes is the way forward?
