I recently saw Viridiana, a great film by Buñuel. I'd appreciate it if anyone could suggest more films like this that deal with the main subject like Von Trier's Dogville and Manderlay (if you have seen those films you can see the relation with Viridiana) that are also very good in my opinion.
TRISTANA (also by Bunuel) is similar-ish in a way to Viridiana (Fernando Rey desiring a woman he can't have), though i think if you like this you should just have a look at literally anything by Bunuel, but im sure you'd like "los olvidados" however, its not very accessible on dvd.
I saw "El angel exterminador" last Sunday. Very good movie. About "Los olvidados", I have seen it and I have to say is very good too. I am going to add Tristana to my "must see" films list. Buñuel is a great director. I will see "Un chien andalou" soon.
Definitely try Buñuel's Los olvidados (1950,) another beautiful film that finds poetry and humour in the poor. http://imdb.com/title/tt0042804/
For blasphemous wit, a rich and long-standing Spanish tradition, try his Simón del desierto (Simon of the Desert; 1965) http://imdb.com/title/tt0059719/
If the Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard, It can also be like a chicken-pox mark.
Definitively you should try another films by Buñuel with a similar subject to some extent: "Nazarín", "El ángel exterminador", "Simón del desierto", "L'âge d'or", "Él", etc..
or some Pasolini works, in particcular "The Gospel According to St. Matthew" and "The Hawks and the Sparrows"
Thanks to all for your recommendations. Equinoccio: so far, I have seen all those Buñuel's films ("Los olvidados", "Tristana" and others too) and also Pasolini's "The Gospel According to St. Matthew". Buñuel is now, one of my favorite directors (I'd like to see "La via lactea") and Pasolini is good too. Although, I did not like his most famous "Salo." In my opinion, "Mamma Roma" is superior.
it's amazing how Nazarin and Simon of the desert are connected with this film-
Actor in Nazarin went through the change of heart from saint to human. In Viridiana, this same actor helps Silvia to go through the same change. In Simon of the desert, Silvia helps Simon to go through transformation from saint.
