I understand Spain lifted the ban after the dicator Franco passed away (to hell).
But, what's up with Vatican? Does Vatican still hold the grudge?!
It's not much flattery for church to share an opinion with a fascist.

To me, I didn't find it offensive at all. It deals with human issues and problems that can't be dealt with eyes closed, as Vatican suggested it with censoring.
Vatican would show strength to unban this film and apologize to Bunuel - just as they did for example to Copernicus and others who said that world doesn't turn around the Pope.

The Catholic Chirch would censor films the considered unfit for Catholics to watch. The Legion of Decency banned many films they considered blasphemous. Psycho, Some Like it Hot, Rosemary's Baby were also banned at various times.

That's why Viridiana wasn't shown in Spain, an almost totally Catholic country, for many years.

Sounds crazy today. The Legion of Decency ceased to exist in the mid 1960s.

I watched Viridiana last night, because I was fascinated by the "see what all the fuss was about" tagline of the Condemned movies.

I was a kid in grade school during the 60s and I remember looking at the Legion of Decency pages tacked onto the bulletin board in the church lobby. A Catholic kid, and a movie buff.
