Dr. Gerrard dinner scenes and phone call (* spoilers *)

*** Please note that this contains spoilers so if you have yet to see the complete film, you might want to refrain from reading this ***

There are 2 scenes in this movie that are kind of noteworthy:

First, the dinner scene (or I guess there are several) with Penny, and Dr. Gerrard, and Mrs. Appleby (Jane). If you know the entire movie, then this scene doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Why is it necessary for Penny to get all in a huff because Dr. Gerrard is telling her her injury might all be in her mind? Is it just to reassure Jane that they aren't conspiring together? But there is never even a hint at this! Not only does it not make any sense in this context, but for the movie it also does nothing to advance the plot. I think it must have been a way to get Christopher Lee to have some acting he could do in this movie. Because otherwise, the only thing he gets to do is be a doctor to Penny after she gets revived after falling in the pool.

The other scene I wanted to comment on was the one where "Penny" gets a call from her father. So this scene is very interesting. Jane has someone on the other end of a phone call who apparently sounds just like her father (or at least Jane thinks he sounds like Penny's father). But "Penny", not actually being the daughter of Penny's father, doesn't know what her "father" sounds like, or does she? So can the way she reacts to the phone call be explained by what is going on? Does she know/suspect at that point that Penny's father is dead (well yes, she had that experience last night where she apparently saw his dead body in the storage room)? If so, then it is understandable that she would be pretty shook up to find him conversing with her on the phone. I wonder if the guy who plays her dead father, was actually the voice on the phone. But what if she suspected she really just did imagine it (I mean, she really did fall in the pool (and almost drown?), and that was a really traumatic experience). So what if she thought maybe Penny's father WAS alive. Then she has to wonder, what is he thinking, hearing my voice instead of her daughter's...
