Did anyone else find this a bit odd....

Now, I find this odd only because of the time this movie was made, now I guess it would be considered ordinary. The scene where Penny and Bob go looking for the body in the dirty swimming pool and Bob comes decked out in only these tiny things that make his butt look like it's in a sling.

It just looks like underwear instead of swimming shorts. I honestly started laughing because it was so unusual. I mean "From Here To Eternity" is before that and Burt Lancaster was wearing (in that famous beach scene) nothing like what Bob is wearing.

I saw this film first run in 1961. The audience exploded with laughter at the then outrageously revealing swim suit Lewis wore.

reply

LOL, thank you. I have been wondering what the reaction of those of us who saw it on TV or DVD, but I never thought what the audience in the theater would have thought back then

I'm imagining their reaction now and seriously laughing. Too funny, thanks!

I just thought of what must have been going through his mind when he heard people laugh at that scene during the premiere. Poor guy, he must have cursed the costume department for making him squeeze into that thing!!

I don't see what the issue is really. Aren't they just Speedos? I mean, yeah, I don't like seeing Speedos on any man - only chicks should wear anything that skimpy, but I didn't find them laughable.

Hasn't a speedo-styled garment been standard issue swimwear for fit men who live on the French Riviera? Hasn't it been that way for decades? It appears that the wardrobe designer made the correct choice.

Also, if I have to see chicks dangling their cracks and flaps in neon colored crotch floss, you can suck it up and look at hot guys in revealing speedos, including the man in question.

reply

I didn't find the scene funny; it was very sexy!

reply

I agree. The scene wasn't funny but the skimpy suit, a shock to Americans at the time, elicited nervous laughter rather than mirth.

reply

No thanks. I don't want to "suck it up" and look at "hot guys" in revealing speedos. I love seeing chicks "dangling their cracks and flaps" in neon colored crotch floss. If you don't, then don't look. Just like I don't look at guys in speedos.

Hot guys in speedos = YEAH! And Ronald Lewis looked hot in his.

Maybe the writer (Jimmmy Sangster) was way ahead of his time and envisioned Bob as a Wild and Crazy Guy. He wanted the audience to see his BBB (Big British Bulges) LOL

Maybe head of the costume department was an Australian, Speedo's originated here way back when, and are still worn today by our gorgeous lifesavers.

reply

It was perfectly customary for Frenchmen to wear those cotton V-shaped drawers at that time.

Really?

You stupid, clumsy labouring boy.

Men's swimsuits were considerably more revealing back then (even Burt Lancaster's trunks in "From Here to Eternity" wouldn't be worn by most American men now.) What this guy was (almost) wearing might have been a bit skimpier than what men featured in 1961. But it was a European film, and even today, men's bathing suits are briefer in Europe and Latin American.

I was pleasantly surprised, myself. He had a better build than I'd expected.

Also, this was an excellent little thriller. What a pity Susan Strasberg's career never really progressed. She was a beauty and quite talented.
