Male or Female?

I noticed that all of Pongo and Perdita's puppies had either a red or a blue collar on and I was wondering if that was to tell which was male and which was female. I figured red collars for the boys (like Pongo's) and blue collars for the girls (like Perdy's). The only thing is that some of the puppies with the red collars sounded like they had female voices. Is that just because they were possibly played by female actors or am I just wrong in my red/blue collar thought??

Very likely. It is quite common practice for actresses to do voices for male children ("bart simpson" springs to mind).

Yeah, I figured as much. Thanks! :)

I noticed that the majority of the puppies had red collars or that some changed throughout the movie...so I don't really know.

Also, with children's voices it's quite impossible to recognize whether it's a boy or a girl. (I'm Czech, and I know only the Czech version, so I apologise if this doesn't apply to the English version.)

You can't really tell either way. I don't particularly care either way. I love the movie, and it's my favorite Disney.

A lot of young boys' voices are high-pitched like girls'.

But if a man talks high enough he can sound like a little boy. Also, a little girl's voice is usually alittle higher than a woman's or a boys'

The puppy with the black eye patch was definately a boy i think?

reply

Well,it does specifically say in my Disney Encyclopedia of Animated Characters that the boy puppies wear red and the girls wear blue.

If it helps I'm pretty sure Lucky, Rolly & Patch were boys and Penny was a girl; and I think they did wear red & Penny blue. Although Rolly's collar changes to blue in the tv series

You're right, the male puppies had blue collars and the female puppies had red. When I was watching 101 Dalmatians for the first time when I was little I could immediately tell that some of the puppies with speaking parts were female.
