Fur Coats

The original idea for this movie is kind of horrifying.

I mean, of course children would realize that these animals would be hurt in order for Cruella to get her dalmation spotted jackets.

With that, it`s sort of shocking that as a child you watch this movie, and you`re horrified by the idea of that, and then as you grow up you do get leather jackets, shoes, fur coats, etc. You`d think that something you watched multiple times as a child wouldn`t stick better, wouldn`t at least make you realize later on that yeah, this happens to minks, cows, rabbits, etc. Some dogs, but it didn`t seem to get to anyone so much that they don`t wear leather or fur.

I mean, I`m sure some of you don`t and you`re vegetarians, etc. but ìt`s sort of funny how something you watch as a child is supposed to stick, yet this movie was sort of brushed off by my generation, I mean, I`m kinda criticized for being a vegetarian.

It may be foolish to think a children`s movie has such an impact, but it could, couldn`t it?

The difference is that puppies are cute. Who thinks cows are cute?

I surely hope that wasn't an argument.
Sure, cows aren't adorable, but they have lives, it's not about how attractive the creature is, it's about the life they're taken away from.

I was responding to

by pointing out that, it sticks so far as it extends to CUTE animals. Who, on average, cares about cows? (Please note I am NOT condoning cruelty to animals.)

Alright. Well that's fair enough for you to say I guess, cuter animal do get more sympathy - not that THAT'S fair.

reply

But, who can resist a cute puppy??

reply

No one, but that's not the point.

reply

Not kidding but when I heard about the adorable white harp seal pups being killed on the ice and snow, turning their surroundings red with gushing blood, I was upset. Then a Canadian set me straight: The same horror takes place with a brown variety, but gets little attention. It isn't the photo op that activists are looking for. The little brown guys are not cute. Also, these hunters need to feed their families somehow and make a living with the seal pelts.
PS I eat venison and hunt. I do not believe in animal cruelty, but each and every creature has a role. Eventually, even those of us at the top of the food chain feed the worms and become soil.

That's the thing though, animals are beautiful, living creatures and the fact that people are defending the fact that they kill them because they aren't cute is unacceptable. Cute or not, they're living and they certainly don't understand why they are being put through that torture.

reply

Get this through your head: no one is DEFENDING killing animals BASED ON whether or not they are CUTE. We're just saying that CUTE animals tend to get more SYMPATHY.

I'm saying that's not fair.

Say it with me, ladies and gentlemen:

LIFE'S NOT FAIR!

Your argument doesn't suffice anyway.

Hey, I'm with you all the way here. It's unfortunate that people can't understand your logic. :(

This is probably why 101 Dalmatians made so much money, whereas Home on the Range was a flop. Puppies = cute! Cows (even sassy cows voiced by Dame Judi Dench) = not cute. Even though both are great movies...

The very first movie I saw in theaters was The Little Mermaid, and I still do not eat fish to this day. Admittedly, I won't eat fish because I think they taste disgusting, but I think that that stems from my emotional attachment to Flounder and Sebastian. And watching Finding Nemo didn't hurt that either. :)

I think that if I was 15 years younger and had seen Home On The Range as my first film, I would probably be a complete vegetarian.

I enjoy reading all these arguments about how much impact these films have on people. I'm actually writing my master's thesis on this topic!

reply

Haha, it's funny you would bring up this topic. I watched countless Disney movies as a child, and my mom blames my vegetarianism on that. :p Of course, a lot of children watch a lot of Disney movies. I guess some of us take the lessons more to heart than others.

And I think cows are cute. Not as cute as puppies, but still cute. I will totally admit, I'm probably the minority in thinking that though. Which confuses me...isn't this cute or am I crazy?

ALSO pigs are the cutest and nobody cares about them either.

Maybe nobody thinks about the juvenile forms of these animals and only thinks about the adult forms, which are admittedly much less cute.

I hope you're not the kind of vegetarian who doesn't eat eggs because in turn they don't eat the vast majority of pastries that have eggs baked into them.

Of course I can't argue against vegetarians since they save loads of money on food that way. I'm just wondering what the boundaries of their diet extends to since many baked goods require eggs. I do also often wonder where they get their dose of protein since it's a necessity to a healthy body.

That is probably the strangest thing about our species .... the ability to dichotomize everything. You talk about Disney movies as a child but how about experiences as adults that literally lose their effects in minutes. People go to a petting zoo and talk about how beautiful and cute sheep are and then hours later can sit down and eagerly gobble up a rack of lamb! Especially when what they are eating comes from mass farming where the animals are treated so cruelly.

I became a vegetarian 15 years ago and it was the best thing I have ever done. With all the choice out there today, one certainly does not need to eat meat especially the mass farmed variety.

It's in our nature to eat cows

We eat cows and when we die, our bodies become the grass and the cows eat the grass. So we are all part of the great circle of life.

reply

Cows were created from wild species by centuries of selective breeding by humans solely for food and materials. They are a crop.

In Western cultures, dogs are primarily raised as companions to humans, with a secondary function in various service roles.

That's why we eat cows and make shoes out of them, but we let dogs sleep on our couches.
