Why no wedding dress?

My 2 year old daughter watches this movie at least daily. I usually watch parts of it here or there with her, but this time I watched carefully the part where Roger and Anita were getting married and it struck me that Anita is wearing what appears to be a short, black skirt or dress/jacket combo. Why would she not be wearing a wedding dress? Or even just a white dress?

I remember asking my mother the exact same question when I was little. The reason is that the story is set in post-war London, while rationing was still in effect. Many women who married during this time had neither the funds nor the opportunity to create traditional wedding dresses; suits became fashionable attire instead, especially during hasty weddings, such as Roger and Anita's! The ladies that did wear traditional gowns often borrowed them from relatives. Hope this answers your question!

I've always wondered this too, and now I think I have it figured out. 101 Dalmatians is set in London in the mid 1920's, so a full wedding dress probably wasn't in style then. Anita was wearing the right clothes for that time period. I'm not sure how accurate my guess is but I think it's close.

I always thought it was set contemporaneously (1961), with the Televisions readily in every home.

I always figured Roger and Anita eloped hence why it was a simple ceremony.

It takes place in 1961.

it's not set in the 20s. the book was published in 1956, and is set at the time it was written. The film is also set in what was the present when it was made - television is an important part of the story.

It really seemed to me that there was only Roger, Anita, the priest and the 2 dogs in the chapel. My feeling is that Roger and Anita eloped, hence why Anita is in just a nice skirt and jacket combo. If you look closely at Roger he's only wearing his casual pants and vest as well.

There have been many times throughout history when the concept of a 'wedding dress' has just been nice clothing - not a special dress. Also, the US is much more known for this phenomenon.

Women only started wearing white dresses because Queen Victoria did, and for a long time only rich women could afford to do so. You just bought or made a nice dress to be married in, and then to be used as a good/Sunday dress.

reply

Because they just had a private, unceremonial wedding with only a preacher and dogs present.

Since the main focus was on the dogs rather than the human characters (who were more like secondary characters) , I guess the rushed that scene just to move the plot along.

But it would have been nice to know how long they dated before getting married and if they had a wedding or planned on having kids. It was too rushed to know those details.
