filming ended nov 4/1960

gable was hospitalized on nov 6/1960

died on november 14/1960

a close call.

Interesting. They may have had enough footage to complete it. Movies are not usually filmed in chronological sequence to the story.

i imagine his scenes were completed weeks before.

People have died while filming movies before, Gable himself was making "Sartoga" in the 1930s when his friend and co-star Jean Harlow died of kidney failure. He had to finish the movie anyway, while doubles wore Harlow's costume and other characters said her lines, it must have been awful for him.

Nowadays they can CGI shots with the actor seeming to be there, but if Gable had died late int he filming they'd have found a way to finish the movie anyway.
