FILM SEEMS DARK

Every time I see the film on cable, the image seems dark. Any one else notice this?

Some of the scenes take place at night. That could be it.

I first saw this film in New Orleans at the old Lowes State Theater on Canal Street. It was playing Mardi Gras weekend in February 1961. We saw it on a Sunday afternoon and I thought at that time the film was very dark just about all the way through. Later when it came out on VHS it still retains that dark look. Maybe it was filmed by an off-the-wall production company with sub standard equipment. Anyway the movie was great ..then and now.....

When I first saw this comment, I thought this was refering to Huston's interpretation of Miller's writing, which had a good take on it.

Now that you write about it, yes, the cinematography appeared to have used filters on the lenses for some scenes, although when I viewed this on a premium movie channel, most of the shots were crisp. Judging from the sun's angle for many shots, much of the movie was filmed at sunset or sunrise.

With Huston directing a Miller script, I'd say the idea of "The Misfits" mise en scene being victim to an 'off-the-wall production company with sub standard equipment' doen't hold water.

I've recently seen it and, as a cinemantographer, recognize many scenes as day-for-night and with deep red and yellow filters. As someone else said, there's a pervasive darkness of character mirrored in the cinematography.

I noticed this more as the film progresses.

The Misfits is a dark film, period. Still, many of the tones seem silvery to me, and some of the contrasts are remarkably vivid.

The Misfits was an independent production . It was not done by a major studio. Marilyn was still fighting with Fox about her two remaining films on her contract Let's Make Love ( which she had just finished ) and Something's Got To Give . So there is a good chance that some of the filming was done by sub-standard crews. Seven Arts Production Company worked on the film...and it was later released by United Artists... The film is still fantastic....because of the talents of Houston and Marilyn and Miller..........
