But ultimately, this film is pretty much a big fat zero for me. Two hours of non-stop meandering, meaningless, often pretentious blather.

And although I like Monty, I think his character could have been written completely out of the script and the movie would have been essentially unchanged.

I imagine that I will get some responses claiming that I've missed the whole point of the movie. To you, I'll say that you've missed the whole point of my post.

EDIT: The 10-15 minutes of action scenes with the horses were breath-taking.

Yes, I'm so sorrowful that it's a "big fat zero" for you. That will certainly affect my enjoyment of it.

I agree with this assessment. It is both MM's and CG's worst movie. Like they were forced to start and finish a movie with an incomplete idea and script, expecting it to be written to a cogent completion before their filming was done.

Yes. NOT a very good movie. The smoke filter lens designating night time was atrocious. Gable was a pathetic character and seemed to be playing John Wayne. Clift and Monroe were just there for visual stimuli and, as usual, Ritter stole the show. (Although Estelle Winwood in a momentary scene was deliciously amusing.)

I have to agree OP, while I wanted to see this film especially to see Monroe and Gable together, the story line didn't amount to much.
