Hi,
Just watched this on TCM and couldn't get closed captioning on the TV and am wondering: when Montgomery Clift's character is telling MM about his father and his past (this is when his head is in her lap), he says his father was out back and then 'boom' something kills him.
I ran the line over and over again and I still don't know what killed his father. Does anyone know?

He sounds like Stanley (Marlon Brando) from Streetcar Named Desire
shareI loved Clift's performace in this movie - and yes, in several moments in this film, I too said to myself that Clift sounded a lot like Brando in "A Streetcar Named Desire."

Montys physical and mental state made him superb in this and Judgement at Nuremberg. To me he is one of the finest American actors we ever had, I just wish he had worked more.
shareI thought his acting was the best part of this film. He was perfect in the role. I lived around a lot of cowboys growing up and he was very believable.
You'll notice he didn't mumble before his accident. This is very noticeable in Raintree County where he filmed 50% prior to his accident and the other 50% after. You'll notice many scenes where he speaks clearly and many where he mumbles, a big differentiator of the before and after.
