Misfits Production 1961

Does anybody know why the film was made in black and white?
With major stars like Clarke Gable, Monroe, Montgomery Clift being directed by John Houston in an Arthur Miller vehicle I would think it would be in colour by the early sixties.
Was the choice of B&W artistic or purely financial?
What was the budget of this movie?

I have heard rumours that this film was filmed in black and white AND colour, but I've yet to follow up these rumour, same with SLIH.

As to why it was filmed in black and white, I've no idea, I think it might have been to do with the stipulation of Marilyn's contract (with Fox?) at the time, I may need to check that.

As for the bugdet, the budget was $4 million.

"Say, is it alright over the you-know-what?" "It's wonderful over the you-know-what."

I'm sure I read somewhere that one of the reasons "The Misfits" was filmed in black and white was to hide MM's bloodshot eyes. I have been roundly trounced in another thread for suggesting this, so am doing some research. I think it was in Anthony Summers' book "Goddess". The other contributor said it was filmed in b-and-w for artistic reasons. I've no doubt we shall soon find out.

I'm not sure if this fits the category, but I saw somewhere that they normally film "artsy" movies in BW. I don't now if that was a hard fast rule.

I don't know about "artsy", but in the '40s, '50s, and early-'60s, B&W was routinely used for films with a serious tone. Splashier, lighter films were shot in color.

After 1966, however, everything in movies and TV had to be shot in color.
