I didn't like the ending

Gay says some sappy line about not wanting someone else to make up his mind for him, and all is forgiven? Nothing that he did or said on that day matters anymore? Roslyn falls in love with him again and it's happily ever after? And then an abrubt end with them making out in the truck?

I didn't like that. If Roslyn had to end up with anybody, why not Perce? He was the only guy of the three whose actions felt genuine during the trip.

reply

Either Perce, or nobody. The characters all should have ended up alone, back where they started. Perce on the road...Guido driving a truck...Gay flirting with some woman...and Rosyln at her dressing table, making up her face.

The Gay/Roslyn pairing didn't make sense after all that. What WAS he supposed to do for a living? Or her for that matter--go back to stripping?

reply

Yeah, it would have made way more sense for Roslyn to end up alone, as much of a downer as that would be. She had that huge speech in the desert, then she betrays her morals to get back with the guy she was just screaming at? And how does letting the horses go that one time make everything okay? He didn't even apologize for catching horses, he just got annoyed that he was being told what to do.

It just felt really rushed.

Roslyn falls in love with him again...
Kind of consistent as she seems to transfer her feelings at the drop of a (cowboy's) hat.

I agree with you about the ending but it was probably indicative of the whole shoot with Monroe, Clift and Huston all on the turps and Miller continually rewriting the script.
