No Oscar nods? Are you kidding?!?!
At the very least, Gable and Monroe should've been nominated.

shareOh, I know. But at the time of its release, the movie was considered a semi-bomb financially, and received very mixed reviews. Even Monroe and Clift hated it.
Within a few years, of course, and some distance, it became clear it was a haunting little classic of its era. Just great.
In fact, it gets 100% positive reviews from the professional critics on Rotten Tomatoes today.

Non-sequiturs are delicious.
I think, and I could be mistaken, that the film received poor to mixed reviews when it was released, which could explain the lack of Oscar nominations. In retrospect one can see how extraordinary this film is. Marilyn Monroe was absolutely poetic and heartbreaking and beautiful. The whole cast is really doing some of their best work here. Monroe, Gable and Wallach all should have been recognized. I also enjoyed Montgomery Clift a great deal who actually nominated that year in support for Judgment at Nuremberg.
shareIf this movie came out now, Monroe and Gable would have won. Monroe's acting scene would have been her existential breakdown in the desert denouncing the three men. And Gable hands down wins with his Daniel Day Lewis meets Nicholas Cage (Leaving Los Vegas) titanic scene where he's drunkenly begging to see his kids.
